Swype Beta for Android opens up again -- don't miss out this time!

Swype promo photoSwype, by far the best on-screen input method for Android phones, is yet again available to download. The beta has been coming and going since the end of 2009 -- but for the second half of 2010 it's been impossible to get in on the action... until now! You can now sign up on the Swype Beta for Android website, and installation details will be emailed to you instantly.

If you haven't seen it in action before, the best idea is just to try it out yourself. But if you don't have an Android phone, our video review is after the break. Basically, rather than hitting each key individually, you draw a single 'line' through the letters you require. Swype, with uncanny accuracy, then works out what you're trying to write. It's very fast, and incredibly refreshing if you're used to jabbing at a touchscreen.

Drop.io and Present.io officially shut down

At the end of October, Facebook acquired Drop.io and set about integrating the media sharing service into Facebook.com. At that time, they spelled out December 15th as the final shutdown date -- and while it's taken a few extra days, Drop.io has finally flatlined. Unsurprisingly, the company's less-talked-about Present.io screen sharing service has also been shuttered.

Both sites now display a no-nonsense "discontinued" message that lets you know you can still email support@drop.io with your inquiries. As for what Facebook plans on doing with Drop.io's assets -- we're just going to have to wait patiently. Perhaps we'll see some sort of Present.io-based video chat feature?

Sushi Restaurant Uses Sushi Robots and Control Centers to Cut Costs [Restaurant]

Kura, a sushi chain, focuses on efficiency and turning a profit. So much so that they've eschewed traditional sushi chefs for sushi robots, a large staff of waiters for conveyor belts and restaurant managers for a control center with video link. More »

Switched On: The 2010 Switchies

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
It's that special time of year between the post-holiday sales and the pre-CES hype that present an opportunity to consider some of the most innovative devices of the year. Switched On is proud to present the Saluting Wares Improving Technology's Contribution to Humanity awards, also known as The Switchies. This year marks the fifth annual Switchies, which are decided based on a rigorous examination of the opinion of me, and do not reflect the opinion of Engadget or its editors. For that latter honor, nominees will need to win an Engadget Award. Let's roll out the red carpet then.

Facebook Photos, now with facial recognition auto-tagging

Facebook Photos facial recognition
Facebook, in a continuing drive to upgrade the most popular portion of its site, will roll out facial recognition auto-tagging of photos in the next few weeks -- if you live in the US, anyway.

Now, when you upload photos, Facebook will compare the faces in the photos with the faces of your friends. If a match is found, you'll be prompted with a suggested tag. If Facebook can't identify a person, it will ask you to enter their name, which will presumably help with identification in the future. If you upload a batch of photos of the same person -- say, from a wedding or birthday party -- Facebook will group those photos together and suggest a tag, making tagging a one- or two-click affair.

With a shocking grasp of foresight, Facebook is going to let you opt out of the auto-tagging process, too! If you don't want your face to be recognized in other people's uploads, hop over to Privacy Settings > Customize Settings, and deselect "Suggest photos of me to friends." [This option doesn't seem to be visible yet, but that could be because I'm in the UK -- or because the roll-out hasn't begun.]

There's no mention of whether you'll be able to auto-tag old photo albums, but I suspect it will be possible.
