SCVNGR To Hover Over Times Square This New Year?s Eve

In a few nights, an estimated 1 million people are going to pack into New York's Times Square for New Year's Eve (brrr). And amidst all of the confetti, snow, and alcohol, they're going to see a whole lot of ads, which is what Times Square does best. One of them represents a win for location-based mobile game SCVNGR: the service will be prominently featured on American Eagle's Times Square billboard starting today and running through the new year. To mark the occasion, American Eagle will be offering New Years-themed challenges on SCVNGR (for example, entering what your resolution is for 2011). For each challenge that's completed, American Eagle will be donating $5 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America ? and SCVNGR will be matching that donation. As people stand outside in the frigid cold waiting for the ball to drop, you can bet a good number of them are going to check out the app.

Samsung unveils i-Functional NX11 mirrorless camera, WB700 with 24x zoom (update: pictures)

Just when you thought it'd be a week devoid of notable announcements -- what, with CES less than a week away -- along comes Samsung with two new cameras. The first one is an upgrade to the mirrorless NX10, naturally called the NX11, that boasts a change in grip design and compatibility with the i-Function lens found on the NX100. The other nitty-gritty details for the 14.6 megapixel shooter: a 3-inch AMOLED LCD screen, VGA viewfinder, 720p 30fps HD recording, and an APS-C sensor. Price and date? $649 with a bundled 18-55mm zoom lens, available in February.

In smaller news -- volumetrically, at least -- the 16 megapixel Samsung WB700 sports a 24x zoom (that's 18x optical and 1.3x smart zoom), a 24mm ultra-wide Schneider Kreuznach lens, CCD sensor, and 1080p HD video. You're gonna have to wait a little bit longer for that one -- April, to be more specific -- for a penny under $300. Press releases are after the break, and we'll get you the pictures as soon as Sammy sends 'em.

Update: We found the pictures!

One-door Napoleonic defense tower is your new evil headquarters [Fortress]

This is a 30-foot-tall Martello Tower in Suffolk, England. It has one door, 13-foot-thick walls, and was built to keep Napoleon out of England. This particular fortress was refurbished with a cushy interior. It's perfect for keeping out nosy do-gooders. More »

WebGL has arrived in Google Chrome Beta; get your gaming hardware ready!

WebGL Quake
Okay, so we're not quite at the point where you're going to be playing the next Crysis sequel in your browser, but still -- the arrival of WebGL in Chrome's beta channel is kind of a big deal. Apart from being able to play around with cool demos like the ones offered up by Google in its official announcement, WebGL is another important step in bringing more desktop-like functionality to the Web.

In addition to cloud-y 3D support, hardware acceleration support is due to arrive at some point -- presumably before Chrome 9 gets pushed to the stable channel. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen, but we'll know soon enough thanks to the six-week release cycle.

Check your Chrome wrench icon for the update notification, or hit About Google Chrome to force a check.

Anyone else up for some WebGL Quake action?

Google search now warns you of hacked and compromised sites

Google search results show compromised sites
Emerging just a week after the high-profile Gawker Media hack, and proving it is still very fleet-footed indeed, Google search results now warn you if a website has been hacked. The notification (see screenshot above) looks just like the malware warning.

Unlike the malware warning, however, you do not get shown the ominous 'visiting this site may harm your computer!' interstitial page. Rather, you are free to click through to the site as usual. Perhaps Google's hack-detection code isn't quite finished, or it is still fine-tuning the process. The only actual change, then, is the addition of the "This site may be compromised" link, which links to a page in the Google Help Center.

The coolest bit, though, is for the owners of websites. If you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools, Google will automatically notify you if your site has been compromised. Google has even produced a guide for cleaning up a hacked site -- cool!

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows

microsoft security essentials
There's really no question what the most popular, free antivirus program for Windows is here at Download Squad. You, our readers, make it pretty clear whenever we post about the topic that Microsoft Security Essentials is at the top of the heap -- and we tend to agree. With detection rates every bit as good as some competing paid products (and better than many), MSE might just be the best piece of free software Microsoft has ever released.

And it's just gotten better, with the official arrival of Security Essentials 2. The upgrade adds several key improvements, not the least of which is a heuristic scanning engine. One of the big knocks against its predecessor was that MSE's protection relied too heavily upon definitions -- and in today's ever-changing threat landscape, definitions just aren't enough. Still, I never had a single machine at home become infected while running MSE 1, so now that version 2 includes heuristic kung-fu I'm even less concerned about the safety of my Windows PCs.

MSE 2 also offers improved defense by better integrating with existing Windows features. The updated app adds muscle to the Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer to offer increased protection against network and Web-based threats. There's also a new network inspection feature which uses the Windows Filtering Platform in Vista and Windows 7 -- XP users won't benefit from this feature, obviously.

If you're already running MSE, check your update tab for an upgrade notification -- your system tray icon may also be orange if the update is available. You can also download Security Essentials 2 manually from this page and install over the old version.
