Rovi announces agreement to acquire Sonic Solutions for $720 million

Rovi Corporation has already gone though a few significant transformations -- it was once the DRM-centered company known as Macrovision -- and it's now set to undergo another big one. The company has just announced a "definitive agreement" to acquire Sonic Solutions in a deal valued at $720 million. Among other things, Sonic owns RoxioNow (the service formally known as CinemaNow), which will give Rovi access to over 10,000 movies and TV shows, and Sonic also just acquired DivX earlier this year, which Rovi points out has a presence on more than 350 million consumer electronics devices. Head on past the break for the official press release, and look for the deal to close sometime in the first quarter of next year if all goes according to plan.

Skype well on the road to recovery, group video calls restored

We almost got to see what Christmas was like before Skype, and it wasn't pleasant. Of course, VOIP and videoconferencing will never replace Grandma Pat's pizzelles, but the technology sure does make pre-holiday planning a lot easier. For its part, Skype hasn't gone into too much detail regarding the nature of its most recent outage (something about "mega-supernodes"), although as of this writing group video calling appears to be back and CEO Tony Bates has announced that customers will be compensated for the interruption of service with free and pay-as-you-go customers receiving credit for a free 30-minute SkypeOut call to landlines, while paid subscribers will get a free week of service. Keep an eye out on the Skype Blog for further updates, and we'll keep our fingers crossed that this year we won't have to learn what New Year's Eve is like without Chatroulette. As for Skype itself, with the way they've been courting enterprise customers they'll just be happy if this doesn't do too much damage to their impending IPO.

Best Wallpapers for Android helps you get some holiday cheer on your home screen

Swiss Codemonkeys are best known as the guys behind the awesome AppBrain website/Android application, which is the de-facto Market for Android (since Google doesn't maintain a Market you can access from the PC). So when I noticed Swiss Codemonkeys has an app called Best Wallpapers, I felt compelled to give it a shot.

It's a very straightforward app; you get a list of categories, including Recently Popular, All Time Popular, Nature, Babes (yes, it has babes, but they appear to be mostly clothed) and a whole bunch of other categories.

At this time of year, the Recently Popular category is chock full of Christmas goodness, which is where the "holiday cheer" comes in. If you're looking for great Christmas wallpapers for your Android device, you've just hit the jackpot.

Once you click into a wallpaper, you can either set it as you current wallpaper or just Favorite it. Favoriting a wallpaper downloads it onto your SD card, and you can then easily access your favorites and set a wallpaper instantly. This basically means you can trawl the gallery at your leisure, building your own catalog of wallpapers which you can then quickly flick between when you get tired of one.

Bottom line: Simple and well-made. And I like my new wallpaper with the cute puppet (top-left in the screenshot).

2010 had some great jams, and all week, MTV News has been counting down some of its best. Everything from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and Rick Ross' "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" to two of Kanye's West's killer My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tracks, "Power" and "Runaway," made the top 10. But it was Usher's bombastic party jam "OMG" that rose to the top and came in at #1.

So what made that song such a party anthem? "Oh my God! That's exactly what I would say! Oh my God!" Pauly D joked about 2010's top party jam. "Dope, dope track. I love playing it. The crowd goes crazy when I play it. Usher's the man!"

Travie McCoy added: "It's a great song. It's undeniable, you know what I mean?"

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer admitted that "OMG" was the track that got dancers, both professional and amateur, on the dance floor. "You guys got a great dance anthem," she said. "So be prepared for people who do not know how to dance just going to town!"

Producer Alex Da Kid gave props to will.i.am for the song's epic beat. "I love 'OMG.' I think it's definitely something different for Usher," he said. "And it still has all the dance performance elements Usher's known for, but it's something slightly different and done in a will.i.am kind of way, and it's different and that's why it connected to so many different people. It's a great song."

Celebrities also weighed in on their favorite jams of 2010, choosing everything from Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" to B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes."

Why did you love "OMG" in 2010? Tell us in the comments!
