See Your Twitter Friends? Social Profiles With HoverMe

HoverMe, a new browser add-on, is launching to add contextual social information about who you follow on the new version of Twitter. After you install the add-on, which works with Firefox, Chrome, and IE, when you hold your mouse or cursor over someone?s name on Twitter.com, it brings up a window that shows links to that person?s profiles on other social networks and media sites. For example, If I hover over my colleague Alexia Tsotsis? name in my Twitter stream, I'll be able togo straight to her Facebook, Foursquare, PlanCast, and FriendFeed accounts via the hovercard. HoverMe pulls in all this information via an API from Qwerly which pulls any profiles that can be found publicly in a Google or Bing search, including LinkedIn, Flickr and more.

Dell's 7-inch (or 10-inch) Android tablet gets WiFi certification?

Remember how Dell's supposed to be introducing a 7-inch Tegra 2-powered Android tablet, like, right now, possibly followed by a 10-inch model in a few months? Well, we're not saying that's what's going on here, but consider the facts: the original 5-inch Streak has a model code of M01M, and a new device with code M02M just popped up in the Wi-Fi Alliance's certification database identified as a "Mobile Internet Device" in the Smartphone category. Yes, 7 inches is a bit large for a "smartphone," but the Alliance doesn't have a great category for these tweeners that support cellular data (and like the European Galaxy Tab, some of them really are smartphones anyway). PocketNow suggests that we could also be looking at the Streak 2, which is possible -- but considering the groundswell of rumors we've been hearing about a slightly larger tablet in the pipeline, that's where our money lies. That holds especially true considering how close we are to CES, which promises to be a veritable tablet-fest this year -- but regardless, we bet the truth comes out within the next couple weeks.

Hands-on: Pinboard is a great Delicious alternative

pinboard
So, Yahoo! went ahead and announced it doesn't like Delicious anymore. This is pretty much the dumbest move I've seen Yahoo! do in recent memory, and Delicious is going to fight for its survival outside of Yahoo!.

I really hope Delicious is going to make it, and I have every reason to believe it will. It's an incredible service, and one of the cornerstones of the Internet. Still, since I rely so heavily on Delicious, as soon as word got out about Yahoo! trying to kill it, I started looking for alternatives.

One of the most-hyped alternatives is called Pinboard, a paid service with an interesting pricing model: you pay a one-time fee determined by the current number of users * $0.001. This means the more users sign on, the more expensive it becomes. When I signed on a couple of days ago, the price was around $7. Now it's $8.65, and will probably keep rising.

Still, it's not a lot of money to pay for a safe home for all of my bookmarks, away from a big company that may make questionable decisions about a service critical to so many users.

But what did I get for my $7? I made a comprehensive gallery that you can see after the jump, and I'm going to walk you through it. Read on for the details!

Bing shopping mall maps help you find the food court

bing

Bing has just announced mall maps, taking maps to the hyper-local department store level. Not only are mall maps "US-only," but nearly all of the current offerings are located in Microsoft's home state of Washington. There are actually a couple of New York malls in the list -- as well as a single one from Boston, Massachusetts.

Bing gives you a fully browsable "you are here" mall directory that integrates seamlessly with the Bing street map. Simply zoom in to get a look at a mall and see the layout of the stores -- try Seattle Premium Outlets to get a feel for what it's like. The Bing team will continue adding malls, but only in the U.S. for the foreseeable future.
