Gawker Media hacked, 1.5 million usernames stolen, CMS breached

gawker

Gawker Media, the company behind Lifehacker, Gizmodo, and several other major blogs, has been hacked. This has been an ongoing story for a couple of days now. At first it seemed only the user database had been compromised, but as further details emerged, it became evident Gawker's content management system had also been breached. A group going by the name 'Gnosis' appears to be taking credit for the hack, which itself appears to be in retaliation to references made by Gawker Media relating to 4chan and other groups. Screenshots mocking 4chan from Gawker's internal Campfire group chat have been exposed to the public.

Around 270,000 user accounts and passwords have been released so far. So, if you happen to have a user account on Gizmodo, Lifehacker or any other Gawker website, now would be a very good time to change your password.

iOS 5 wants: Game sync via Game Center

Knoword is a fun way to test and improve your vocabulary

knoword
Think you have a good vocabulary? If that's true, Knoword lets you show it off... or find out that maybe it isn't as great as you thought. Knoword is a fast dictionary game. You'll be shown a definition along with the first letter of the word and you need to figure out what the word is. Once you type the word (correctly, mind you - spelling matters), you get points and get the next word.

Initially you have 60 seconds to figure out the correct response; with each word you find correctly, you receive additional time. When you find several words in a row, you get a "Word Streak" badge. If the game has you completely stumped, you can always skip a word. This also requires a bit of quick thinking, because skipping a word results in a small point penalty. On the other hand, the clock is ticking... so is this word on the tip of your tongue, or should you skip it and go on to the next?

You can also open an account and have your game results saved. If you're good enough, you may end up somewhere in the player rankings.

Nuu MiniKey for iPhone 4 preview: yep, another (bulky) keyboard case

A number of iPhone keyboard cases have popped up lately, from the TK-421 flip-out case (which we reviewed) to the BoxWave Keyboard Buddy. We've spent the better part of 24 hours using an engineering sample of Nuu's MiniKey QWERTY slider for iPhone 4 -- expect "a few minor changes to be made" before actual launch -- that the company was kind enough to send over. So, how's it stack up?

Ke$ha's 'We R Who We R' Video Is 'Hot And Dangerous'

Cannibal singer throws sexy, dark dance party in just-released clip.
By Jocelyn Vena

In the video for her first Cannibal single, Ke$ha wants everyone to know "We R Who We R.". Flashing lights open the video as Ke$ha, in a high ponytail and body-hugging sparkly leotard, and her crew roll through a tunnel as a fire burns in the background. The singer promised explosions, and she delivered.

As she makes her way through the tunnel, a close-up shot of the singer reveals another eye-catching look: eyebrows complete with actual studs, and her makeup as glittery as ever. Cars zoom by as the crew hangs in the tunnel, continuing on their way to a party.

When they arrive, Revolucion tequila is on full display at a post-apocalyptic rave. Apparently, Ke$ha has now hit the product-placement stage of her career, a move made by Lady Gaga in several of her most-recent clips, notably, "Telephone."

Ke$ha parties it up with her people while the two female DJs scope out dating site Plenty of Fish, which also made an appearance in Gaga's "Bad Romance" clip around this time last year.

Mid-party, Ke$ha changes her garb. She is now draped in an American-flag top and sparkly hot-pink hot pants, and is partying so hard, she stage dives off a roof. Luckily, the crowd below catches her. The video closes with a smiling Ke$ha dancing her heart out, proclaiming proudly that "We R Who We R."

While Ke$ha has relied on comedy in many of her past clips, her latest is darker and sexier than the girl who flipped off her parents in the "Tik Tok" video, something she shared with MTV News a few weeks ago.

"This video is a little bit 'sexy time.' I'm not gonna lie: It may induce a boner or two," Ke$ha said, laughing. "I'm not sure, [you'll have to] report back. But I'm hoping for at least one."

She tweeted Wednesday about the video's premiere, writing, "Hot and dangerous!!! Brand spankin new videoooooo for We R Who We R!!!"

Britney Spears: A Look Back At Her Singles ... So Far

With her new album due in March, we revisit some of the pop princess' many hits.
By Jocelyn Vena

Now that Britney Spears has announced that she will be releasing a new album in March 2011, fans must be wondering what her latest musical endeavor will sound like. The as-yet-untitled effort is a follow-up to 2008's well-received Circus, which helped resurrect the singer's career after a dark time in her life. No information regarding the upcoming album has emerged, but Britney's faithful followers have watched her change up her look and sound with each single over the span of her decade-plus career, as she evolved from a bubblegum-pop princess to a sexy dance-club siren. Let's trace Spears' musical journey by taking a look at some of her most memorable tunes.

In 1999, a fresh-faced Spears released " ...Baby One More Time" (produced by Max Martin), the title track off her massive debut album. She got the conversation about her sexuality started thanks to a provocative video in which she danced around in a Catholic school uniform, as well as the song's equally provocative lyrics, where she longingly sang, "My loneliness is killing me/ I must confess, I still believe/ When I'm not with you I lose my mind/ Give me a sign/ Hit me baby one more time." It's to be noted that the song originally was intended for TLC.

In the video for "Oops! ... I Did It Again" (produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub), Spears' smash from the 2000 album of the same name, the pigtails and skirt were gone, replaced by a red catsuit. That visual, as well as the song's lyrical content, reflected Spears' evolution from naughty schoolgirl to intergalactic sex kitten, both in her video and on the song's lyrical content.

For "I'm a Slave 4 U" (produced by the Neptunes) off 2001's Britney, Spears declared her sexual independence. No longer was she just teasing about the idea that she loved the beat of dance music and how sexy it made her feel, instead she was explicitly sharing it with the world. Plus, who could forget all the sweat in that video.

In 2003, Spears teamed up with the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for "Me Against the Music" (produced by Christopher Stewart and Penelope Magnet), the sexy lead single from In the Zone. While the darker, more synth-heavy "Toxic" would become the album's defining tune, "Me Against the Music" picked up where "Slave" left off: Spears battling the demon she has inside of her that just loves to come out on the dance floor.

After a few years of not putting out any music, Spears hit the club again with 2007's "Gimme More" (produced by Danja) off the aptly titled Blackout. Between the release of In the Zone and Blackout, Spears had married, divorced and become a mother — she also had started to act erratically. The track, which relied more heavily on underground dance and electro than most of Spears' previous singles, was a highly sexualized tune about getting it on.

After the darkness of Blackout, Spears got back to her fun and frolicking old ways on the 2008 Circus single "Womanizer" (produced by the Outsyders). The track was a return to form for Spears after the lackluster response to Blackout, and it brought the discussion back around to her music and away from her sometimes topsy-turvy personal life. In the song's video, Spears gets back at a player, and really has the last laugh. The clip also features ffotage of a completely nude Britney in a steamy sauna.

In 2009, Spears shot to the top of the charts with the danceable track "Three" (produced by Martin and Shellback) off The Singles Collection. The tune was an instant smash, and featured Spears robotically singing about a ménage à trois over a club beat.

As for what's next for the singer, very little is known about her forthcoming album, although a couple of her producers have dropped some hints. Dr. Luke said that the music will "be a departure from what you've heard," while Danja called it "hard-hitting, uptempo [and] high-energy." Spears, meanwhile, is very clear about how she thinks the record is sounding. "I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT!" she tweeted.

HTC Incredible HD teased for January 6th reveal?

See that? No, not all the ambiguous 4G talk, we mean the veiled phone. If we had to guess we'd say that we're looking at a January 6th reveal of the HTC Incredible HD / Mecha -- a device rumored to be headed to Verizon's new LTE network. Unfortunately, we don't know who 2mymob.com is (the domain carrying the tease) or how it's affiliated with HTC. So don't go entering your mobile phone number into the field where you can sign up for notifications. The site seems to be linked with Yahoo! marketing and by entering your number you're consenting to receive "further complimentary marketing text messages by SMS to your mobile phone," according to the terms and conditions. Don't do it. We'll let you know the very minute the Incredible HD is launched, which, by the looks of things will happen at CES in Las Vegas.

Update: The site is indeed official -- it's the "Mobile Version" linked directly from the HTC.com website.

Kindle for Android updated with integrated store, zoom, move to SD and more

kindle
Our good friends over at Engadget report that a new version of Kindle for Android is now out. Here's what's new:
  • The volume buttons can now be used to turn pages. This isn't touted as a major change, but it's actually very handy.
  • There's an in-app store just like on the 'real' Kindle. It's very mobile friendly, and offers books and subscriptions for newspapers and magazines. Just what you'd expect, basically.
  • SD card support: The app can now be moved to SD with no hackery involved.
  • Chapter titles are now shown on the status bar. That's actually the top part of the status bar; not all books have this enabled, as the screenshot to the right of Food Rules shows, due to their small size, but further testing with larger books such as Seth Godin's Linchpin did work.
  • Other updates: Social network sharing, graphics zoom, and bug fixes.
All in all, a worthy update. You can find the QR after the jump.
