Opera 11 RC 2 now available for download

opera 11
Opera's developers have been pushing hard to finalize version 11 of the do-it-all browser. After just releasing the first Opera 11 RC only yesterday, they've already shoved the build aside to make way for RC2.

While you won't find any new functionality in the RC, the RC builds are more stable and usable than previous snapshot releases. Extension support has been improved as well, and there are are now around 200 you can add to your Opera 11 install. Opera's mail client has also been greatly improved, with drag-and-drop ordering of accounts and folders and a navigation panel which hides itself automatically when you're using a non-mail tab in browser.

You'll also find Opera 11's tab stacking more solid now, with RC2 landing several crash fixes for the clutter-busting feature. Like comepting browsers, there have also been tweaks made to the address bar -- which now shows more detailed security information about the site you're browsing. Search suggestions are now supported as well, using Google's prediction API.

If you were waiting for hardware acceleration, it looks as though you're going to have to wait for a future version. There's no sign of HWA in Opera 11 RC2 and ECMAsciprt 5 support is still somewhat lacking. Hopefully both those shortcomings will be addressed in the near future.

Check out the screenshots after the break, or go grab Opera 11 RC2 and take it for a spin yourself!

Ford Sync AppLink ready to download for 2011 Ford Fiesta, iPhone support coming early next year

Wouldn't it be nice to connect your phone to your car and control Pandora with your voice? If you drive a 2011 Ford Fiesta, you can do so right now, by downloading the Ford Sync AppLink platform that's finally ready for primetime. So far, Pandora's one of only two apps that natively support voice commands (the other being OpenBeak) and it only works on BlackBerry and Android, but Ford says that Apple's iPhone will play nice with AppLink sometime in "early 2011." You'll find a thorough press release trumpeting the news after the break, and the download should be available at our source link any minute now. Then, you get to transfer it to a USB stick, and plug it into your car. Just imagine saying that to someone fifty years ago.

Ke$ha Reflects On 'Really Intense' Breakout Year

Billboard cover girl is the magazine's Hot 100 Artist of the Year.

She was overlooked by the Grammys, but Ke$ha dominated radio and the charts in 2010 with her Auto-Tuned electro-pop and a distinctive "garbage chic" style that had everybody talking.

In the latest issue of Billboard, the party-girl pop star opens up about her whirlwind rise to the top, saying she has no regrets about her breakthrough year.

"Are you kidding me? I pretty much feel like I've been reborn into this completely different existence," the singer told the magazine when asked how life had changed for her. "My entire life has become making music and playing shows, and I love it. I've accepted the fact that my fans are now my family, and I won't be having boyfriends. I'll just be having a really amazing relationship with the radio."

The pop star said that although she "wasn't clueless" about what fame might bring, it far exceeded her expectations. "It's just not at all what I expected it to be like," she said. "It's really intense, more intense than I ever thought it would be."

Recalling paparazzi chasing her as she made her arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Ke$ha said, "I was having an anxiety attack, like, 'I just wrote some pop songs, man!' "

Ke$ha, who graces the mag's cover wearing a crown as she pops a bottle of champagne, also talked about her big debut single, saying, "Sometimes I need to remind myself that 'Tik Tok' only went to #1 in January, because it kind of feels like it was 17 years ago."

The mag went on to ask if "Tik Tok" was the best way to introduced herself to the public. "I don't know. We didn't really know which song to come out with first," Ke$ha said. "It was kind of a debate, because I didn't initially come out as a rapper; I've always been a singer. So having my first single classified as kind of a rap song felt bizarre to me. But now it's become something of a trademark, and it's becoming more legitimate. I've talked to some of my favorite rap artists over the past year — artists who are idols — and they've given me mad props."

What was your favorite Ke$ha moment of 2010? Tell us in the comments!

Google Places blocked by TripAdvisor, but no one knows why

Google blockedIn an interesting and slightly inexplicable move, TripAdvisor has blocked Google Places from using its massive wealth of hotel and resort reviews. Now, when you search for hotels on Google, and browse around Google Maps, you will no longer see snippets from TripAdvisor.

Given Google's recent spate of Places updates, this is either a very bold or very brash move from TripAdvisor. Hotel owners will no doubt be upset at the loss of traffic -- and I'm still not quite sure what TripAdvisor gains from blocking Google. We'll update you with more information, if any emerges.

McDonalds hacked, customer database stolen, your burger preference now in the wild

McDonalds hacked; Ronald sadDon't worry, this one isn't quite as bad as the Gawker hack: McDonalds -- and over 100 other firms -- have had their marketing databases compromised, and summarily stolen. An email marketing company called Silverpop is to blame for the breach -- and fortunately, 'only' real names, interests and email addresses were breached; no passwords, and no Social Security or credit card numbers were stolen.

While McDonalds is probably the biggest name on the list, it seems the creative users of deviantART are also affected -- and a brief look at Silverpop's site suggests it might have upset some other very big names, such as Mazda and the banking giant Santander.

There's no information about how the hack was achieved, but the FBI has said that the attack originated from outside the US. In all likelihood, the attack was probably carried out by spammers, or the operatives of spammers. An email address database the size of Silverpop's would sell for millions.

Porn in the United Kingdom to become opt-in

UK coat of arms (government)Not one to let the hyperconservative Australian government walk away with the censorship crown, the UK government plans to make the surfing of Internet porn opt-in. Next month, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey will meet with major UK ISPs to discuss a blanket block of porn. Rather than porn being available to all, UK surfers will have to contact their ISP to be allowed on a 'porn surfing whitelist.'

In customary political masquerading style, this is being pushed through as a "think of the kids!!" measure. It recently emerged that as many as one-in-three children under 10 in the UK has seen pornography on the Internet, and the government, spearheaded by Conservative MP Claire Perry, wants to protect those kids at all costs. The irony is, it's not like 10-year-olds have their own computers and Internet connections -- they are either viewing porn at home, at a friend's house, or at school. If dad, or mom, opts into the porn whitelist, we're back at square one.

Of course, the other option is that mom and dad swear off the porn altogether, for the sake of the children. But is that really a fair system? Isn't that just censorship, dressed up as something else?

"Oh, yeah, we're making alcohol opt-in too. Most children are abused by drunken parents... and you don't want to abuse your kids, right?" While we're at it, how about a special ID card that lets you buy pornographic magazines and DVDs from shops? Why should the Internet be treated differently?

Seriously, the reasoning behind this program is that porn is damaging to children. As in, on a mental health level, children are being scarred by the early viewing of porn. Why porn, instead of violent imagery? Is porn really more perverse than the face-planting, gonad-thumping masochism readily available on YouTube? Will video games be next, and will you have to carry them in brown paper bags?
