No Lock for Android disables "slide to unlock" keyguard

nolock

My Android device has a tiny power button, and it's usually in a holster. Really, what are the odds of me turning it on accidentally?

If you purchased previously reviewed power-tool Tasker, you can use it to selectively disable the slide to unlock feature, amongst the myriad of other things it can do.

However, if you didn't purchase Tasker, or are just looking for a quick and free solution, No Lock might be right up your alley.

This no-frills app presents a huge button you can press to toggle the keyguard. When the keyguard is off, you need only press the power button on your device to start interacting with it - no sliding involved.

There's also a handy 1x1 widget you can put on your homescreen and tap whenever you want to toggle the keyguard. The only feature I wish it had is a "dual button" unlock, whereby I can press the power button and then the camera button to unlock; I think that could definitely keep me from switching the device on accidentally. Still, for most cases, No Lock gets the job done. You can find its QR code after the jump.

Making My List, Checking it Lots

We get exposed to a lot of neat gadgets over the course of the year. I have enjoyed seeing what my colleagues want, and what they suggest. Now it is my turn. I’ll warn you, I have a reputation in my family for putting some pretty expensive stuff on my wish list. I figure, if [...]

New research says e-cigarettes are safer than real ones, no cigarettes safer still

Research swayed back and forth on the health risks associated with e-cigarettes since their debut in the US about three years ago. The faux cigs, which are essentially nicotine inhalers intended to help smokers kick the actual smoking habit while still getting their dose of nicotine, the main addictive ingredient in tobacco. In the first truly comprehensive study of the somewhat controversial nicotine replacement method, researchers at Boston University's School of Public Health has found that not only are e-cigarettes much safer to "smoke" than normal ones, they may also aid in kicking the addictive habit altogether. According to the researchers, "few, if any" of the chemicals found in e-cigarettes pose serious health risks, and carcinogen levels in them are up to 1,000 times lower than in actual tobacco. This research, of course, disagrees with the FDA's findings that essentially, the chemicals found in e-cigarettes were risky and unknowable. The FDA has yet to evaluate e-cigarettes the way that they have done with all medications and other nicotine replacement products, so we can't be sure, but it's looking more and more possible that if you just need to smoke, an e-cigarette may be a safer route... for everything but your dignity, of course.

Android App Tracks, Helps Wandering Alzheimer?s Sufferers

If Grandma tends to wander off in fits of forgetfulness, you should probably buy her an Android phone. Tell My Geo is an Android app for sufferers of Alzheimer’s, which acts a lot like Apple’s Find My iPhone service, only it’s for people, not phones. Send Granny off with the app installed and you can track [...]

Stop Firefox from Automatically Entering "Work Offline" Mode [Annoyances]

The "Work Offline" mode in Firefox can be useful if you don't have an internet connection, but Firefox annoyingly enables it automatically whenever you lose connection, even for a second. Here's how to disable that behavior. More »

Tribler, the decentralized, EU-funded torrent client comes of age

Tribler channel
In a research lab at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, a lucky bunch of professors are working on the only tax-funded BitTorrent client in existence: Tribler.

Tribler, if you're used to uTorrent, doesn't look like anything special -- but a brief glance reveals a 'Search' bar at the top of the program, which lets you search the swarm for torrents, rather than having to hit an external index like The Pirate Bay. It is this functionality -- this disassociation from any external source -- that makes Tribler the first truly decentralized BitTorrent client. Honestly, I don't understand the actual technology at play here. I'm not sure how a bunch of Tribler clients can discover each other without a central server, but who am I to argue with TorrentFreak?

Even without the decentralization, Tribler has some neat features. It's the first client with real 'spam control': users can up- and down-vote 'channels' of torrents, making sure the useless crud sinks to the bottom. The Download Squad favorite VLC is also included in the Tribler package, meaning you can watch or listen to torrents as they download. Check the Tribler wiki for more info.

Of course, Tribler is open source and free to download. It's even cross-platform, with Windows, Mac and Linux clients available.

Gawker Media hacked, 1.5 million usernames stolen, CMS breached

gawker

Gawker Media, the company behind Lifehacker, Gizmodo, and several other major blogs, has been hacked. This has been an ongoing story for a couple of days now. At first it seemed only the user database had been compromised, but as further details emerged, it became evident Gawker's content management system had also been breached. A group going by the name 'Gnosis' appears to be taking credit for the hack, which itself appears to be in retaliation to references made by Gawker Media relating to 4chan and other groups. Screenshots mocking 4chan from Gawker's internal Campfire group chat have been exposed to the public.

Around 270,000 user accounts and passwords have been released so far. So, if you happen to have a user account on Gizmodo, Lifehacker or any other Gawker website, now would be a very good time to change your password.
