Dropbox Hits 1.0, Adds Features

I'd like to extend hearty congratulations to the Dropbox team for doing what many web-based companies might avoid for years on end: putting out a 1.0 product. It's a bit arbitrary, of course — this useful and popular service has been running great for quite a long time now, and the "beta" tag has always seemed mysterious to me. But they've done what they felt needed to be done to justify dropping it, and the improvements are substantial. The most important new feature is probably the selective syncing: you can now select which computers sync with which folders, so you don't need to worry about your off-site HD footage backup saturating the shabby wi-fi at a coffee shop.

Google eBookstore now available on Android, iOS, Nook and Web... if you're American

Google e-book store
Gentlemen, start your e-readers! Google, as promised, has launched its e-book store. More than 3 million titles are available to read right now, and you can read the books on the Web, or a wide range of devices. [At the time of publishing, the iOS app isn't yet available.]

With Android, iOS, Nook and Sony e-reader compatibility, Google surely knows that it could have a Kindle killer on its hands -- at least in the US, anyway. Google says it's working with publishers around the world to bring its e-books to those of us not lucky enough to be born in America.

Hands-on: Tubeify mashes YouTube, Billboard, and Last.fm

Tubeify

While YouTube offers its own solution for music-lovers, it is not ideal if you're more of a listener. After all, YouTube leans towards watching videos, and its interface is geared toward that task. Still, YouTube does carry an awful lot of musical content, and there must be a better way to harness this wealth of content and make it into a personalized radio of sorts. Indeed, this is what Tubeify attempts to do.

The service is invite-only at this point, but I got my invite immediately upon asking for it. I then took it for an extensive spin, and produced the gallery which you can see at the end of this post.

Selection

While YouTube does carry a ton of music, it doesn't have everything. For example, a simple search for King Crimson completely stumped the system. It came up with the Last.fm record for the album, but since YouTube did not contain even a single track, it wasn't very useful.

Reachin'Pichin is a hopping, kawaii Time Waster

reachinpichin

In Reachin'Pichin, you take the role of a genetically engineered creature whose manufacturing process went awry. While that sounds quite ominous, it's really not: you were supposed to be able to fly, but instead, you can merely hop.

Your goal in life (or in the game, at least) is to reach as high into the sky as possible, by leaping from platform to platform. At the beginning of the level you are launched from your lair beneath the surface of the planet. Once you emerge into the beautiful, pastoral air, you only need to move right and left to land on the randomly-placed platforms.

Once you land on a platform, it instantly catapults you upwards. It also vanishes, so you can't land on it again: your only hope is rising high enough, and accurately enough, to reach another platform.

It's not a very easy game, but it's super cute. The character is lovable, and the soundtrack is simply addictive. Loads of fun!

Wall Street Journal says apps may violate privacy, fingers MySpace and Pandora

You might have heard how careless some third-party apps can be with your personal data, but it may not yet have hit home -- offenders can include must-have programs like MySpace and Pandora, too. The Wall Street Journal tested 101 popular apps for iPhone and Android and discovered that over half transmitted unique device identifiers (UDID) to a flock of advertisers without so much as a prompt, and that some (including Pandora) even transmitted a user's age, gender and location to better target their marks. Now, before you boycott your favorite music apps, you might want to hear the other side of the story, which is that all this data is typically processed in batches and anonymized so that advertisers can't necessarily separate you from the crowd. However, the worry is that there may be little stopping nefarious individuals from creating a database that links your UDID to all this other data you send out. It's a juicy proposition for targeted advertising, sure, but also potentially real-world crime, so we doubt this will be the last we hear of UDID privacy scares.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows

microsoft security essentials
There's really no question what the most popular, free antivirus program for Windows is here at Download Squad. You, our readers, make it pretty clear whenever we post about the topic that Microsoft Security Essentials is at the top of the heap -- and we tend to agree. With detection rates every bit as good as some competing paid products (and better than many), MSE might just be the best piece of free software Microsoft has ever released.

And it's just gotten better, with the official arrival of Security Essentials 2. The upgrade adds several key improvements, not the least of which is a heuristic scanning engine. One of the big knocks against its predecessor was that MSE's protection relied too heavily upon definitions -- and in today's ever-changing threat landscape, definitions just aren't enough. Still, I never had a single machine at home become infected while running MSE 1, so now that version 2 includes heuristic kung-fu I'm even less concerned about the safety of my Windows PCs.

MSE 2 also offers improved defense by better integrating with existing Windows features. The updated app adds muscle to the Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer to offer increased protection against network and Web-based threats. There's also a new network inspection feature which uses the Windows Filtering Platform in Vista and Windows 7 -- XP users won't benefit from this feature, obviously.

If you're already running MSE, check your update tab for an upgrade notification -- your system tray icon may also be orange if the update is available. You can also download Security Essentials 2 manually from this page and install over the old version.

Velocity Micro's 7-inch Cruz T301 Android 2.0 tablet surfaces on Amazon, shipping now for $250

It's like a Cruz Tablet, but with a T301 thrown into the mix. All jesting aside, we'd wager that the vast majority of simpletons wouldn't spot the differences between the existing Cruz Tablet and the T301 at a glance, and honestly, we wish Velocity Micro would've done a little work to remedy that. For whatever reason, the 7-inch slate is shipping with Android 2.0, and while the 800 x 600 capacitive touchpanel sounds lovely indeed, it's hard to get riled up for such a stale operating system. For those unconcerned with the luxuries present in Eclair and Froyo, there's an 802.11n WiFi radio, built-in Kindle app and a user replaceable Li-Ion battery that could last up to ten hours on a good day... or so the company says. Without question, the highlight here is the price -- at just $249.99, it's definitely creeping down into LCD e-reader territory, with a lot of bells and whistles to boot. She's shipping today if you're so inclined.

(The) Greatest Thing Facebook Ever Did Was Drop The ?The?

Or so argues this music video about ex-Facebook president Sean Parker's mythical contribution to humanity. Behold as a goofily dressed and bewigged Parker sings about the apocryphal moment (as seen in  The Social Network) where he convinced founder Mark Zuckerberg to drop the "the" in TheFacebook and just go with Facebook.
