The Next New Year of Linux on the Desktop: 2011?

Those of us who have been part of the FOSS community for more than, oh, say 10 minutes, are no doubt already familiar with the recurring "Year of Linux on the Desktop" debate. It's a topic that comes up again and again in the Linux blogosphere. Well, guess what? It's baaa-ack. Yes, the "Year of Linux on the Desktop" debate has resurfaced once again, and just in time for the holidays.

Oxygen Audio debuts O'Car, O'Dock iPhone car docking accessories

Looking for a bit more integration than your usual iPhone car dock or FM transmitter can provide? Then you might want to consider Oxygen Audio's new O'Car head unit, which packs a swiveling iPhone dock that's considerably discreet than some other similar units out there. It's also, of course, a full-fledged car radio, and it packs a 4x55W amp that Oxygen says delivers "perfect quality sound" to your car's speakers. If that's all a bit too much for you, however, Oxygen has also announced the decidedly more standard-looking O'Dock unit that simply mounts on your dash or windshield -- check it out after the break. Unfortunately, there's still no word on pricing or availability for either unit, but we're assuming those details will be made available at CES next month.

Microsoft scores 120,000 USDA users in massive cloud win

microsoft online services usda
Microsoft (and just about every other big computing company) is bullish on the cloud, and the Redmond company announced a massive migration win yesterday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be moving around 120,000 users to Microsoft Online Services.

It's a nice feather in the cap of Microsoft, which only earlier this month received its Authorization to Operate from the Fed. Microsoft V.P. Curt Kolcun believes the USDA deal will get the ball rolling, saying "Nearly every federal agency trusts their productivity needs to Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SharePoint today." He continued, "From a momentum perspective, I think this announcement is going to be a phenomenal catalyst to drive more interest from the federal CIO community to think about moving their full messaging suite applications to the cloud with Microsoft."

... And so the battle for the cloud continues. Your move, Google!

24 Ways, the geeky Web developer advent calendar, is back for 2010

24 ways, advent calendar for Web nerds
Back for its sixth year and as nerdy as ever, 24 ways gives you a delicious daily dose of design and development between the 1st and 24th of December.

Almost every article has something to do with CSS or HTML, and it's definitely not targeted at beginners -- but if you work with websites, or you know someone that does, 24 ways is a must-read. The archives are fantastic, too, if only to see the dwindling popularity of technologies like AJAX, and the rise of CSS animation.

Even if you're not a Web designer or developer, I would suggest you check out 24 ways just for its beautiful layout. I think the entire site uses only one image, with the rest being glorious CSS. It does look a bit like a modern, gray-and-pink Scottish tartan, though.

If you find the site useful, and want to give something back, there will be a book containing the 24 articles, and all proceeds will go to UNICEF.

Dynamic Eye LCD sunglasses blot out the sun, not the rest of your life (video)

Dynamic Eye LCD sunglasses blot out the sun, not the rest of your life
Those giant Chanel sunglasses you bought for $450 may make you look happening at the pool, but did you notice the extra squint-lines you're getting thanks to their barely-there tinting? Not cool, and that wouldn't be a problem with Dynamic Eye shades. The concept model above admittedly looks worse than that pair of knockoff Oakleys you got for $20 from some mall kiosk, but that's hugely better than the early prototype demonstrated below, ready for its cameo in Revenge of the Nerds V: Nerds Hit the Beach. The concept is simple: each lens is an LCD that creates a dark box over the sun, blotting out the biggest source of glare and allowing the rest of the glasses to remain rather less tinted. They're even said to work at night. It's a project the company has been working on for years and still has many months of development left, but it feels close enough to ask for your help via Kickstarter. If you're feeling generous, a $400 donation will ensure you get one of the first pairs to roll off the assembly lines -- or you can just chip in $10 for now and get an e-mail telling you when you can order. Probably the safer way to go.
