Google App Inventor opens up access to everyone, clings on to beta tag

Google's famous penchant for keeping things in beta doesn't seem to have changed lately, as the company's App Inventor for Android is still keeping its Greek lettering, but at least access has now been opened up for everyone to enjoy. The switch from private to public beta isn't the most significant thing in the world -- up until now you just had to ask for an invite to get one -- but we're sure amateur Android coders and experimenters will appreciate not having to go through that extra step. The App Inventor's sitting in Google Labs right this minute, waiting for you to magic up (no coding skills required!) a finely crafted solution to modern living of your own. Hit the source link to get your mouse pointer dirty.

Pocket Projector Packs Wi-Fi for Computer-Free YouTube

Pocket projectors are fast heading towards impulse-buy status, and Chinavision’s Mini Projector with Wi-Fi and Wireless Remote $200 price-tag is as impulse as it gets right now. And as you may have guessed, it has some fancy extras. The projector itself uses a 3-watt LED lamp, unlike the increasingly common focus-free laser models, which puts [...]

Amazon unveiling new, better Kindle Web app tomorrow

When we first got a look at Amazon's Kindle Web app, it wasn't too exciting -- the embeddable viewer offered only one-chapter glimpses at select titles. Tomorrow, however, Amazon will release an update to Kindle for the Web, and it's going to offer a much-improved reading experience.

The new Kindle for the Web will compete directly with Google's new eBookstore, which just launched in the U.S. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Computerworld that Kindle Web will "enable users to read full books in the browser and [allow] any Website to become a bookstore offering Kindle books."

We'll have a look at the new app tomorrow, and hopefully this time we'll be able to peruse favorites like Patton Oswalt's Zombie Spaceship Wasteland.

Windows Phone 7 "Mango" may add HTML5, Silverlight support to WP7's browser

Over at ZDNet, Mary Jo Foley has been speculating about the future of Windows Phone 7. According to Foley, a major update is due around Jan/Feb 2011, adding copy/paste functionality and two major browsing enhancements: HTML 5 support and a Silverlight plug-in. Foley also wonders whether enterprise tweaks might be part of the game plan as well. Microsoft, of course, doesn't comment on rumors -- so we'll have to wait for someone to score some hands-on time with the WP7 update.

Despite the update's appetizing codename, Microsoft doesn't seem to be converging on a single food-related theme for its Windows Phone OS. The next release, Windows Phone 8, is codenamed "Apollo". We can only hope 8.5 will be codenamed "Starbuck".

Bear in mind this is all sheer speculation; however, after Windows Phone 7's somewhat lackluster launch, any sort of improvement could be exciting.

Firefox 4 Awesome Bar gets a bit of Googleesque 'Instant' magic

Mozilla Labs Prospector, Instant Preview
Muddying the waters with yet another 'Instant' product, and with only one letter differentiating it from one of Google's new features, Mozilla Labs has just launched the next step in the Prospector experiment: Instant Preview. Now, as you scroll through possible results in your Awesome Bar, the target page will begin to load. Instead of having to guess if it's the right page, you'll be able to glance down and check... instantly!

Mozilla Labs points out that you can also use it for 'temporal' information, such as weather and stocks news, or a Web comic. Type the first two letters of your favorite comic into the Awesome Bar, and the comic automatically loads. Read it, then simply press Esc and the Web page you were looking at before instantly re-appears.

Of course, you could use the same technique to check Download Squad regularly, too.

Google Cloud Print is now available

With the first Chrome OS release due to be unveiled by Google later today, this really shouldn't come as a surprise: Cloud Print is now fully active. You will need the latest Chrome Developer version installed. Head to your Google Chrome about:flags page and enable the Cloud Print Proxy, and you'll be instantly plugged in.

Your Cloud Print queue manager will display all the printers you've got installed on your computer, along with any active and recently completed print jobs. When you hover over a printer, a drop-down appears which enables you to share or delete the printer from Cloud Print.

We'll have more on Cloud Print, Chrome OS, and the Web Store later on -- Google news will be breaking all day.

LinkedIn shows technical savvy, deactivates Gawker-compromised accounts

LinkedIn securityIt looks like at least one security team has their finger on the pulse: LinkedIn, after hearing about the Gawker Media hack, obtained the database of email addresses and cross-checked it against every member of LinkedIn. If a match was found, the account was immediately deactivated and an email sent to the user, forcing them to change their password.

Judging by a thread over at Hacker News, other tech-savvy companies might be following a similar process, including Blizzard, the operator of World of Warcraft.
