Giant Domino Clock Flips Its Dots

Carbon?s Domino Clock is pretty much just what it sounds like: three giant dominoes hanging on the wall and telling the time in a difficult-to-read fashion that would make Tokyo Flash proud. With a little deciphering, though, you can work out what it says. In the picture above, the clock reads 12:59 (at least I [...]

Keepsy: A Photo Album Made By A Friend Is Cool. One Made By All Your Friends Is Cooler

Giving how the web has transformed photo sharing, it's a little odd that it hasn't done much to the tangible photo space. Sure, just about all of the major sites allow you to order prints, and many allow you to create fairly simple photobooks, but those are essentially the same products they've always been ? they're just slightly easier to make. Keepsy wants to change things up. The new startup founded by Peter Weck and Blake Williams, focuses on creating "more than a photo album." Essentially, they use the social dynamics of the web to crowdsource the creation of photo albums amongst friends. So instead of me making a photo album for you filled with the pictures I have with the two of us in them, a group of friends bring all their pictures together to make the book.

No Windows 8 demo at CES in January?

Thanks to a single sentence in a New York Times article, a number of blogs are trumpeting the first public demonstration of Windows 8 at CES in January. It was already known that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would be on stage to showcase a handful of slates, but would they really be running the first builds of Windows.next already?

According to the Times, a source "with knowledge of Microsoft's plans" believed "Ballmer might demonstrate a tablet and other companion devices running the next operating system, Windows 8." However, as Tom Warren points out, Microsoft is currently laying out the groundwork for Windows 8 -- planning and preparing for what Ballmer called Microsoft's "riskiest product bet."

January seems a bit soon to be showing off something your CEO thinks is your "riskiest bet," especially considering this is the same company that just tried to launch the Kin. While there may indeed be a prototype or concept device on display, there's a good chance it could run an existing flavor of Windows with a slate-specific UI on top. Windows 8 itself, however, will likely not be on display.

Clementine music player gets better with Jamendo and IceCast support, smart playlists, and more

Clementine -- the upstart music player inspired by Amarok -- continues to mature into a very capable app. Recently, Clementine 0.6 was released and it added several nice new features.

For starters, Clementine now offers Jamendo and Icecast on its Internet listening tab. With thousands of Icecast streams to choose from and Jamendo's massive catalog of music (which is available everywhere in the world), you've got plenty of back-up for those times when you're a little bored with your personal library. The first time you access the Jamendo library it will take Clementine a little while to parse it, but it's well worth the wait.

The artist info tab now pulls information from a variety of sources and includes biographies, Last.fm artist tags, and photos. Clementine also lets you zoom images and save them to your desktop. Clementine's sidebar now offers more customization options, and there's a new kitten plug-in in case you grew weary of the Hypnotoad. Perhaps the best addition to the new version, however, is the option to create smart and dynamic playlists from the songs in your library.

Clementine has come a long way since we first looked at it, and it's become an excellent, cross-platform music player.

Alien Torture Instrument or Home Beverage Gadget?

The Teafu looks a little like something you’d see on the latest sci-fi alien abduction flick. In reality, it’s not so scary. It’s a loose leaf tea infuser from Dreamfarm. Available in a variety of colors, this infuser has a premium grade dishwasher safe silicone pod that holds the tea leaves. By squeezing the pod, [...]

If You?re A Good Person Or A Web Browsing Fiend, Download This Chrome Extension Now

I'm addicted to browser tabs. I probably open several hundred of them each day during my regular web browsing. And today brings good news: Google wants to reward me for that. Well technically, Google wants to reward charities on my behalf for my obsessive web browsing. A new initiative today called "Chrome for a Cause" asks you to download a Google-made Chrome extension that will note your tab opening activity and allow you to donate to one of five charities at the end of each day based on your usage. Yep, just browse the web, and donate to charity.
