Keen On? Tim Ferriss: How To Turn Your Body Into A Startup (TCTV)

Tim Ferriss is one of the world?s leading transcenders of limitations. Best known as the author of the 2007 monstrously successful self-help guide The 4-Hour Workweek, a #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller that has accumulated over 1000 reviews on Amazon, the Princeton-educated and globe-trotting Ferriss is also a legendary bodybuilder, life hacker and re-inventor of the physical self. According to Ferriss, modern man is driven by two great fears: 1) Too much email. 2) Getting fat. So it?s no great surprise that Ferriss? follow-up to The 4-Hour Workweek is The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman, which is released tomorrow. While his first book was a guide to overcoming too much email, Ferris? latest work is a guide to overcoming the limitations of the physical body. It?s a hacking guide to the body ? a book which encourages us to treat our bodies as entrepreneurial start-ups that require continual innovation and reinvention in order to fully realize ourselves and, of course, lose weight. Video ahead.

Beyonce Laughs Off Heat Commercial Controversy

'It upped my sales,' she tells 'The View' after her perfume ad was banned in the U.K.

Beyoncé caused a bit of controversy last week with her red-hot commercial for her latest fragrance, Heat. The ad was banned from daytime rotation in the U.K. thanks to its steamy images of Beyoncé. When the singer and her mom, Tina Knowles, stopped by "The View" on Monday (November 22), she seemed happy about the outcome.

"I think it was very good, because a lot of people went and watched the commercial," she said. "And it upped my sales."

Beyoncé not only had a good-natured laugh about the response to her ad, but she also poked fun at her ever-present wind machine, explaining why she seems to always have one on hand during her performances. "Where's the wind coming from? It started out only [to stay cool], and then it kind of created this effect with my hair," she explained. "You can only imagine, the show is two and a half hours. It's really, really warm onstage."

While B didn't dish about life with her hubby, Jay-Z, she did reveal that she's a bit messy at home, despite being so together when she hits the red carpet. "Well, I think because I work really hard," she said. "When I'm home, I don't want to think about it."

Beyoncé seemed a bit more comfortable when it came to giving a shout-out to Jay-Z for making an appearance on her concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," which premieres on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC. She recounted how Hova surprised the audience by joining her onstage in Rio de Janeiro. "We talked about it; we knew he was in town," she said. "Kanye, as well. He was in town that night."

Sony announces suite of SD cards for cameras that don't work with Sticks

Sony has announced three (count 'em) new series of SD cards, giving amateurs, pros, and prosumers alike even more choices on where to stick their pics. First up is the budget Essential Series in 2, 4, and 8GB capacities, offering Class 4 (4MB/s) speeds and little else. Next up is the similarly Class 4 Experience Series, which adds 16 and 32GB models to the list. Finally is the full-bore, Class 10 Expert Series in 8, 16, and 32GB capacities. This is obviously your choice for high bitrate HD recording (hello PMW-F3), but any should do just fine for taking pictures. All come with a handy "memo space" for those with petite handwriting and ultra-fine point pens, and all ship in January, but, alas, none have been assigned MSRPs just yet. Now, who said Sony doesn't like industry-standard formats?

World's smallest battery uses a single nanowire, plant-eating virus could improve Li-ion cells tenfold

When it comes to building better batteries, building electrodes with greater surface area is key, and scientists are looking to exotic methods to attract the tiny particles they need. We've already seen graphene and carbon nanotubes soak up those electrons, but the University of Maryland has another idea -- they're using the Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) to generate usable patterns of nanorods on the surface of existing metal electrodes. By simply modifying the germ and letting it do its thing, then coating the surface with a conductive film, they're generating ten times the energy capacity of a standard lithium-ion battery while simultaneously rendering the nasty vegetarian bug inert.

Meanwhile, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Sandia Labs was more curious how these tiny charges actually work without confusing the forest for the trees, so to speak, so a team of scientists set about constructing the world's smallest battery. Using a single tin dioxide nanowire as anode, a chunk of lithium cobalt dioxide as cathode, and piping some liquid electrolyte in between, they took a microscopic video of the charging process. See it in all its grey, goopy glory right after the break.

Kinect, with the magicians from MIT, fulfils its Minority Report destiny

MIT and Kinect, a la Minority Report
If you're getting bored of Kinect videos, this ought to bring you back around! In this video (also after the break), MIT demonstrates just how close we are to Minority Report user interfaces.

MIT shows that the Kinect camera, along with the recently-released libfreenect driver, is capable of incredible object resolution. Not only is each of the user's hands recognized, but the fingers and their orientation can be identified (look at the lines extending out of the fingers in the screenshot above). That kind of detail makes complex hand gestures possible, such as pinching or pointing -- imaging being able to point at an object in a virtual line-up, grab it, and then mold it by pinching, twisting and pulling it apart with your hands.

It's amazing how many awesome proofs of concept the OpenKinect project has produced in just a few weeks. It also makes you wonder what Microsoft and its first- and second-party developers have in store for us next year. There's no way Microsoft will let some beardies at MIT steal its thunder, so it must have something cool up its sleeve.

Incidentally, MIT has open-sourced the code for the demonstration above! You'll need a Kinect, and a Linux box, but it actually looks quite easy to set up. I may have to try it... and record it for Download Squad, of course.

Motorola's 10-inch Honeycomb tablet meets Mr. Blurrycam, shows off Verizon logo

By now you're probably familiar with this slate, seeing as how Google's Andy Rubin recently unveiled it on stage, but we're willing to bet you've never seen the top edge -- you know, the part now bearing a front-facing webcam and a conspicuous Verizon tattoo. Yes, this is Motorola's 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, and it's playing for Team Red just as foretold, though the tipster who obtained these images isn't sure whether it will bear the name Stingray, Everest or even potentially "Trygon." Spec-wise, we're told our previous tipster was right on the money, and it'll have a 1GHz Tegra 2 T20, a gyroscope and 32GB of storage underneath that 1280 x 800 multitouch screen, as well as 512MB of RAM and a slot for an up-to-32GB microSD card. It also sure looks like there's a micro-USB jack, a mini-HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone socket, as well as some contacts for a likely dock, though as always Mr. Blurrycam's handiwork is such that we can't quite tell. No matter -- see for yourself in the gallery below.

Update: What's that button on the back of the unit, right next to the speaker and dual LED flash? Why, it's the power toggle, of course.

[Thanks, wnrussell]
