Why I Don?t Buy the Quora Hype

Let me start with a disclaimer: I am not writing this in my capacity as a university professor or researcher; I don?t claim to be an expert on social networking; and I will be happy to be proven wrong?I have no vested interest in the success or failure of Quora.  And given the fire I?ve already taken for tweeting an opinion that defies the Valley?s infinite wisdom, I know that this post will offend many in Silicon Valley?as did my piece on why I Craigslisted my iPads.  But I just don?t believe that Quora will ?rule? or become anything like Facebook or Twitter.  It has been a very nice private club; but it?s not for the general public. Quora is a new question-and-answer site on which a few notable members of Silicon Valley?s tech elite have expressed their opinions.  Some of the discussions have been very informative; some, completely misinformed.  Some questions are of general interest, such as: Will there be a tech sector crash in the near future?; some are obscure: Who are the most successful entrepreneurs with Iranian roots?; some are just plain silly: How much does Netflix spend on postage each year? Quora?s membership is growing largely because of the attention that TechCrunch has given it (including the Best Startup award). Over the last month, I received dozens of messages from TechCrunch readers asking what I think about Quora and why I am not using it.

Cocoon hands on: the one-shot solution to private and secure Firefox browsing

Cocoon
A lot has been said about safe, secure surfing in recent months. Firesheep brought the necessity for HTTPS (and WPA-encrypted WLAN) into the limelight, and the Gawker Media breach reminded all of us that no one is safe.

The truth is, if you want to stay secure on the Web, you have to take a proactive stance. You need to install LastPass or KeePass, and using HTTPSEverywhere is a very good idea too. A good anti-virus suite like Microsoft Security Essentials is a necessity, and get into the habit of regularly scanning with Malwarebytes.

Alternatively, you can scrap everything and just use Cocoon, a service that proposes to solve all of your privacy and security problems in one fell swoop. There is a 45-day free trial, and it requires Firefox 3.6.13. I suggest you install it, and then read on!

Britney Spears Taking Risks For 'Hold It Against Me' Video

'She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music,' choreographer Brian Friedman says.

In Britney Spears' "For the Record" documentary, the pop icon stressed the importance of dance in her life, even saying that she'd be "dead" without it. And on the heels of a new era in music, the singer is ready to take her signature dance skills to a whole new level in the music video for her latest single, "Hold It Against Me," according to choreographer Brian Friedman.

Speaking with MTV's "The Seven," Friedman dished details on rehearsal time, his take on the new tune and his longtime partnership with the entertainer.

"This is a dance video. Rehearsals can get pretty rough," the choreographer said. "We're playing it safe, we're not trying to kill ourselves yet, but as the video comes closer and closer, we'll definitely be hurting our backs. There was a moment while we were rehearsing where I showed Britney a section and it was something I really wanted her to do, and she freaked out. ... It's crazy when you first see something like that, how overwhelming it can be, especially when you haven't been in the [dance] studio for a year."

Despite Ms. Spears' early hesitation, the dance mastermind said it was probably the wrong section of the routine to show her first, revealing that the pop superstar has learned the moves and is "killing it now."

Reports of a new Britney music video leaked in December when the fansite BreatheHeavy.com posted a notice for auditions. "It's been the biggest buzz, you know?" he continued. "There's been a lot of speculation as to when the actual project started and it's been blowing up on my Twitter. People have been asking, 'Are you in rehearsals? Are you in auditions?' and that's the mystery that should be unknown. What we do know is we're in rehearsal studios right now and the video's coming."

How exactly does "Hold It Against Me" fare in comparison to the slew of other dance tunes under Britney's belt? Calling the iTunes chart topper "the hardest dance track that she's ever put out," Friedman said, "It's infectious. The beat gets inside of you, and just when you think you know it, it takes a turn. The song, in particular, is one of my favorite songs I've heard off the bat. I'm really excited about choreographing it."

Spears and Friedman have a long-standing professional relationship, including working together on the pop singer's 2002 dance heavy "Overprotected (Remix)" music video. Later on in his chat with "The Seven," the Illinois native recalled his first encounter with the then-teenager through a mutual friend who was dancing for her at the time. After meeting with the singer, Brian teamed up with her for her Grammy performance.

"From then on, we became friends and she is fun to work with," he gushed. "She's a Southern girl — she's all about having fun and laughing and cracking jokes. I think you can expect the unexpected from Britney. She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music — she's grown up so much, and she's pushing 30 years old soon, so she's a strong independent woman and I think she wants to show that."

Auspex is a free text replacement app for Windows with tons of potential

Finding a really good free text replacement/expander app for Windows isn't an easy task. Yes, AutoHotKey is an excellent program, but it's not a good fit for people who don't enjoy hacking plain text configuration files. Breevy is an extremely nice GUI app, but it's shareware. Auspex -- developed as part of NANY 2011 at Donationcoder -- might be the free program we've been waiting for.

The Auspex interface makes it easy to add new text replacement strings. Give your entry a name, a mnemonic (the text that will be expanded -- ms in my example), select a trigger, and add your replacement text. You can also set up a list of applications you want to monitor or ignore so that Auspex doesn't kick in when you don't want it to. Autocompletion (and a fair sized dictionary) is built-in as well, and you can control everything from how soon suggestions are made, to the colors used in the pop-up boxes -- just press tab to complete a word.

One fun feature of Auspex is its "odometer." As you use your text replacements, Auspex will keep tabs on the number of characters you've saved. There's also a wizard for creating new entries, though it's a bit of a work-in-progress at the moment. True text manipulation wizards will appreciate the fact that Auspex supports regular expressions, which enables you to create complex text replacement schemes.
