RedRiot is a high-performance shooter -- Time Waster

redriot
I often enjoy writing about minimalistic, retro-style time-wasters. You know, games that seem to come from a simpler time, when graphics was very basic, and it was all about speed and gameplay.

Well, RedRiot is one exception. The graphics here are nothing but basic, and accordingly, this game takes a while to load. Once it loads, though, it's great fun. You're a super-warrior floating around the screen with a jetpack, and each level is a "mission" with its own objective. You're may be called upon to destroy a couple of radar towers, or perhaps several missile silos, etc.

As you go about your business, the enemy will try to stop you. At first, there are only tanks that roll around on the ground and shoot up at you. But fairly soon, you start getting drones that fly around the screen, shoot at you and do their best to make your life difficult.

There's a shop at the end of each level, and you can buy extra damage, extra lives, improved accuracy and all sorts of goodies. This is a great game for when you want a time-waster, but not one that looks like it was made in 1980.

Nexus S OTA 2.3.2 update rolling out now, your SMS relations will thank you

Embarrassing SMS misdirect bug on your Android device? Nexus S owners should start checking their phones now for an over-the-air update that's supposed to fix the problem. It's being rolled out gradually, so just be patient if it's not there yet. How will we know the problem's gone for good? We'll just assume so until we find out otherwise, in some unfortunate manner.

Evidence of Duke Nukem Forever's existence continues to mount with new trailer, release date

Gearbox Software promised last fall that they'd finally, really finish and release Duke Nukem Forever, and it's starting to look like they're actually going to come through. The studio has just released a full trailer for the game, and it's announced something that many though they'd never see: a release date. Assuming nothing goes horribly awry in the next few months, you can expect the game to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on May 3rd in North America, and May 6th worldwide. Still need a bit more convincing? Head on past the break for the trailer.

Sorami-skydrive for Android connects to your Windows Live cloud storage for free

SkyDrive is a fantastic cloud storage option that many people still don't know about. With 25GB of free space for your synced files, Hotmail attachments, and Office Web docs, it's worth signing up for an account (if you don't already have a Windows Live passport). What's even better is that SkyDrive storage can be accessed by other apps -- like sorami-skydrive for Android.

Install the app, enter your credentials, then tap the back button, and you've got full access to your SkyDrive storage. Not only can sorami download files, but the app can upload files to SkyDrive from your Android device. You can also create new folders, and the home button quickly returns you to the top level of your SkyDrive folders.

Sorami-skydrive is currently in beta, so expect a few bumps along the way. After creating a new folder, for example, the app became stuck on a 'loading' alert and I had to kill the task. The developer is very responsive to bug reports, however, and sorami-skydrive is improving at a steady pace.

Apple hacker digs up Qualcomm baseband proof by decompiling iTunes?

We're a little short-staffed on Qualcomm chipset engineers at the moment, so forgive us if we can't immediately confirm this tale, but we're hearing iPhone hacker Zibri has discovered proof of the Apple / Qualcomm collaboration in his very own build of iTunes. Zibri claims that by tearing apart the latest version, he found the chunk of code above, which contains files that are allegedly the exclusive "building blocks" of Qualcomm radio firmware. That doesn't tell us anything about a supposed iPhone 5 or iPad 2, unfortunately, as it's probably just referring to that CDMA chipset in the Verizon iPhone 4... but with the right building blocks, one can craft any number of wonders.

BMW working on electric 5-series sedan for China, we still can't get a diesel

BMW working on electric 5-series sedan for China, we still can't get a diesel
Surely it'll come elsewhere eventually, but for now an electric version of BMW's generously proportioned 5-series sedan looks destined exclusively for China. As part of the company's partnership with Brilliance China Automotive, BMW Brilliance Automotive is planning to create a pure EV 5-series and to show it off this year -- at some point. No further details are known about the car, though we're quite sure why this is happening. EVs are becoming more and more popular there as China struggles to shrug off a massive foreign oil dependency and BMW saw a similarly massive 87 percent jump in growth of its sales in China in 2010. So, there's your motive, but we'll still have to wait a bit for the rest of the details.
