How to make only part of a cell bold in Microsoft Excel

This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

By default, when you click a cell in Excel and hit Ctrl+B or the B button on the toolbar, the entire text of the cell becomes bold. However, sometimes you may want to make just part of the text bold, and not the whole thing.

To do this, simply start editing the cell by hitting F2. Select the text you'd like to make bold, and hit Ctrl+B. This will make only this part of the cell bold.

You can use this same technique to color specific words in the cell: Select one or two words while editing a cell, and use the Font Color button to change their color.

Logitech's M515 Mouse That Finally Works On Couches [Mice]

I've been using Logitech's previous Anywhere mice in the living room to control a HTPC, but it's only been adequate, not great. This $50 Couch Mouse might be very much better, because it'll work on a couch, bed or carpet. More »

One Case to Fit them All: Apple Redesigns iPhone 4 Bumpers

Apple has quietly modified its iPhone 4 Bumper cases to fit the new Verizon iPhone. A difference in the antenna designs for the standard GSM and the new Verizon iPhones meant that the mute switch had been moved very slightly closer to the volume switches on the new model, meaning that precisely-fitting cases like Apple’s [...]

WeWood Watches

WeWood is a company based out of Los Angeles with an idea originally stemming from Italy–to create an organic, completely natural watch inspired by the rooted but reaching power of a tree.  The resulting product, judging from their catalog, is just as much art as functional watch.  They currently offer two basic types of watch [...]

Emblaze First Else UX engineer embraced by HP / Palm, magic ensues

Remember that day when Emblaze wowed the world with its First Else "death of main menu" smartphone? What a shame, eh? While it's unlikely that said Linux handset will ever be resurrected, there's a small chance that bits of its legacy will be passed onto other products. For instance, a recent LinkedIn newsletter led us to Itai Vonshak, who was one of the main engineers behind the architecture that powered the First Else's brilliant, mesmerizing UI. Now, according to his profile, our man has recently moved into HP / Palm's comfy little house to do UX strategy. Whether this means webOS will get a slice of that Minority Report action, we don't know; but it'll be interesting to see what Vonshak will surprise us with at the HP / Palm event next month. For now, there's a hands-on video of the First Else after the break for old time's sake.

Google: Spam Really Has Increased Lately. We?re Fixing That, And Content Farms Are Next

Over the last month, you may have seen some of the reports that Google's search results are overloaded with spam. This isn't a new phenomenon (for years now I've been tearing my hair out whenever I try to find a manufacturer instruction manual online), but people are noticing that it's getting worse. Fortunately, Google seems to be listening. Today Matt Cutts, who heads Google's search quality team, has written a blog post stating that there has indeed been a "slight uptick of spam in recent months", and he details what Google is doing to fix it.

Usher 'Got A Good Laugh' From Fan Kicking Him In The Face

'It looked worse than it actually was,' the 'OMG' singer laughs about accidental blow during concert serenade.

Usher's club-rattling jam "OMG" may "kill it every night" according to tourmate Miguel, but when the Atlanta crooner hit Madison Square Garden earlier this week, he was almost taken out by a clumsy fan.

When the singer touched down in New York on Monday, he indulged a super amped fan's fantasy by pulling her onstage for an intimate flirty serenade of "Trading Places." As Usher and the concertgoer got cozy on a recliner, she swiveled around to face the crooner — knocking him squarely in his mug with her foot. She began apologizing profusely as Usher briefly paused to collect himself. But the superstar took the strike in stride, quipping, "We play rough in the bed. We kick each other in the face and all type of good stuff."

Although Usher brushed off the blow, the moment did make an impression on him.

"In all my years, this is one of the most interesting experiences. I got a kick out of it!" he told Us Weekly. The singer assured fans that the knock wasn't that bad. "It looked worse than it actually was. My audience and I got a good laugh."

As for the fan, the "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" star maintained everything is all good on that front too. "Wherever you are baby, don't feel bad," Usher said. "No hard feelings."

As Miguel has noted, Usher isn't one dwell on drama, whether it's cranking out another hit album or weathering an unexpected hit from a fan.

"He's such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination," Miguel recently told MTV News. "I was there throughout this album, so I've seen the adversity that he's had to overcome perception-wise."

What do you think of Usher's response to getting knocked in the head by a fan? Tell us in the comments!

Toshiba launches Flashy tablet teaser site, still doesn't have a name for said tablet

Nope, Toshiba's recently announced Android 3.0 tablet doesn't have a name yet, but it does have its own Flash-based website. The site doesn't reveal anything all that new about the device -- we already knew it had a Tegra 2 processor, replaceable battery, and a 1280 x 800-resolution, 10.1-inch display -- however, it does provide a pretty nice tour of the tablet with a 360 view of the hardware. Speaking of that tour, Toshiba specifically points out that the tablet will in fact keep those "Quick-Key buttons," even though Google's Matias Duarte told us that they aren't required. You still have to wait until the spring to get this one in hand, but hit the source link to get a pretty nice virtual look at it right now.

Updated: Ah, it really is all about Flash, isn't Toshiba? Ina Fried over at AllThingsD noticed that if you try and load Toshiba's new tablet site on an iOS device the following message appears: "Such a shame... if you had a Toshiba Tablet you would enjoy the entire internet. Yep, Flash sites too." That's true Toshiba, but we don't have your tablet right now, do we?

Hands-on: Gentle Alarm for Android is a beautiful way to wake up

gentlealarm
When I listed Gentle Alarm as one of my top Android apps, I promised a more in-depth review -- and here it is! Here are the key features of the app that's been (successfully!) waking me up every morning for the past several weeks.

Profiles

One of the best concepts in Gentle Alarm is that not all alarms are exactly alike. The Profiles screen lets you set up individual alarm "types". As you can see, each profile has its own complete set of options: You can select whether or not you'd like to have a pre-alarm (more on these later), the duration of the alarm, the initial and final volume, the alarm tone (or MP3 tune), and more.
