CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes

CorelDRAW
When most people hear the words "vector graphics", the first thing that comes to mind is Adobe Illustrator. While Illustrator is a wonderful application, it's certainly not the only game in town: I've been using CorelDRAW for several years now, and I just love it.

I'm not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you're just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you've tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.

Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.

By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you'd like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

Verizon Says "Eff You" to FCC's Net Neutrality Rules in Federal Appeals Court [Net Neutrality]

I'm sure this will deeply anger Senator Al Franken: Verizon's challenging the FCC's net neutrality rules in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, saying it's "deeply concerned by the FCC's assertion of broad authority for sweeping new regulation of broadband networks and the Internet itself." GNOME 3 website now live, tries a bit too hard to be cool, looks like Unity

New, clean-and-simple HTML5 websites are obviously in this week: GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux, has just released a new website to celebrate the features of version 3, which will be released in April.

With phrases like "SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL" and "DISTRACTION-FREE COMPUTING" plastered all over the site it's obvious that GNOME not only likes capital letters, but that it's also trying to capitalize on the recent movement towards simpler, less-shiny interfaces. GNOME 3 now has a slogan, too -- "made of easy" -- which, to be honest, feels like it's trying a bit too hard to be cool.

As to GNOME 3's actual features, there's built-in messaging (which presumably works with most IM protocols), and a new notifications system. The system settings panel has been overhauled, and the Windows key has been commandeered to provide quick access to your system: just hit the Windows key and start typing -- like Windows 7 or Vista.

Before we finish, does anyone else think that GNOME 3 looks a lot like Canonical's new Unity? There's side-by-side images of them after the break. GNOME 3's release coincides with Ubuntu 11.04, incidentally -- but, just to reiterate, while Unity will be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu, users will be free to switch to either GNOME or Unity 2D.

If you can't wait until its stable release in April, and you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can build an alpha version of GNOME 3 with JHBuild.

Britney Spears Going For A More 'Urban' Sound, Danja Reveals

According to music producer Danja, Britney Spears is still hard at work on her March album release. The producer, who has worked with Spears on songs like "Gimme More," "Break the Ice" and "Kill the Lights" in the past, reveals that he and the pop superstar are still working on tracks together.

"Britney, I don't have too much news, but I'm always creating something," he told MTV News on Thursday, just as Spears' first single, "Hold It Against Me," reached the top of iTunes charts worldwide. "Still recording. She still has songs to cut, but we'll see what happens."

When asked what kinds of songs he's throwing together for Britney, his comments echoed those he made last June. "I just took my track level up. I just wanted to make sure it's still hard-hitting and still that same energy that people heard, but very today's time," he said. "So we'll see. I don't know what the project will end up being, but we'll see. We did have a meeting like a year ago, and they wanted it to sound urban, hard-hitting, not so much dance, but just that similar sound."

Danja says that he has yet to actually get in the studio with the star, but he has been in conversation with her about any potential songs that might be included on her still untitled album. "Well, for me, this time around I haven't been in with her yet," he revealed. "It's just been us writing and creating and really nailing a sound or a song more than anything."

In addition to working on tracks for the album, Spears is also hard at work on the video for her first single. Her choreographer Brian Friedman spoke to MTV's "The Seven" this week, describing what fans will see when the video drops.

"I think you can expect the unexpected from Britney," he said. "She is taking risks when it comes to fashion, when it comes to choreography, when it comes to this music — she's grown up so much, and she's pushing 30 years old soon, so she's a strong, independent woman and I think she wants to show that."
