RedRiot is a high-performance shooter -- Time Waster

redriot
I often enjoy writing about minimalistic, retro-style time-wasters. You know, games that seem to come from a simpler time, when graphics was very basic, and it was all about speed and gameplay.

Well, RedRiot is one exception. The graphics here are nothing but basic, and accordingly, this game takes a while to load. Once it loads, though, it's great fun. You're a super-warrior floating around the screen with a jetpack, and each level is a "mission" with its own objective. You're may be called upon to destroy a couple of radar towers, or perhaps several missile silos, etc.

As you go about your business, the enemy will try to stop you. At first, there are only tanks that roll around on the ground and shoot up at you. But fairly soon, you start getting drones that fly around the screen, shoot at you and do their best to make your life difficult.

There's a shop at the end of each level, and you can buy extra damage, extra lives, improved accuracy and all sorts of goodies. This is a great game for when you want a time-waster, but not one that looks like it was made in 1980.

Best Buy To Talk You Out Of Verizon iPhone (Which They Won?t Have) With A BGR Blog Post

We're now just three weeks away from the launch of the iPhone on Verizon's network (or two weeks if you're already a Verizon customer). There's no question it's going to be a massive seller. And we already knew that AT&T would attempt to do everything in their power to make sure that their customers don't jump ship. But now it appears that they may have a partner in this perilous mission: Best Buy. A document obtained by GearLive, which they say is confirmed as an internal Best Buy playbook, details how the company is instructing employees to deal with questions about the Verizon iPhone. Specifically, they're to use the following argument:

Starbucks lets you pay for that Trenta with the iPhone in your shaking, overcaffeinated hands

Expanding a trial that had already been underway in a few markets, Starbucks is now rolling out its Starbucks Card mobile app nationally with payment capability built-in, meaning you needn't reach into your wallet, pocketbook, or purse just because you're jonesing for that midday caffeine fix. Instead, you can fire up the app -- which supports the iPhone, iPod touch, and a number of BlackBerry models -- and hold up a barcode on the screen to a scanner in the store, at which point monies will be automagically deducted from your Starbucks Card account and transferred back to the mothership in exchange for high-octane brew. The circle of life, as it were. Follow the break for the full press release.

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."

That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.

For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.

Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Microsoft's new HTML5 Labs lets developers experiment with emerging Web standards

html5labs
Microsoft just launched a new site/developer playground called HTML5 Labs. It's a service letting developers experiment with parts of the HTML5 standard that are still emerging - things like WebSockets, a standard draft allowing bi-directional communication over a single TCP socket.

Rather than another shiny HTML5 showcase ready for general consumption, this is aimed at hard-core developers eager to get their hands dirty: Each prototype has to be installed and configured manually, and the whole thing comes with a big red "WARNING" label saying that the specifications are unstable and will change.

Still, if you're a Web developer trying to keep ahead of your game, it's much nicer to be able to see and play with actual implementations rather than read dry drafts of Web standards.

DIY 3D volumetric display / Kinect hack spices up the Fortress of Solitude's kitchenette

Here's another one for the "things we wish we had in our kitchen" file. Taha Bintahir has put together a homebrew 3D volumetric display that can -- you guessed it -- display 3D rendered images in all their free-floating glory. And if that wasn't enough, our man added gesture controls via the Kinect so he doesn't have to circle the object to view the whole thing. According to Hack A Day, Bintahir designed and built the prism itself, rendered the object he wanted to display (in this case the Superman logo) from four different camera angles, and projected the images on the four walls of the prism to create the 3D object in the center. Oh, and he distorted each of the images to match the angle of the prism's walls. Pretty insane, right? Hit the source link for more detail on the project -- but not before you see it in action after the break.
