Apple?s Insane Q1 ?11: $26.7 Billion Revenue, $6 Billion Profit; 7.33 Million iPads, 16.24 Million iPhones

Apple has had a rough couple of days. Yesterday, CEO Steve Jobs announced a medical leave of absence. As a result, the stock plunged today before rallying back to close down just over 2 percent. But this should cheer everyone up. Apple has just announced their Q1 2011 (their holiday quarter) earnings ? and as many anticipated, they're massive. How massive? Well, coming off its best quarter ever in terms of revenue ($20.34 billion in Q4), Apple was projecting $23 billion in revenue for the quarter. The Street, meanwhile, recognizing that Apple always lowballs these numbers, thought revenue would be more like $24.38 billion. The actual number? $26.74 billion.

15.6-inch Monitor Runs Off Single USB Port

This 15.6-inch TFT LCD screen from Green House may look like any other LCD monitor (except that maybe it’s a little smaller than we’re used to), but it has a magic trick: It runs on USB, which makes it one of the largest USB display’s we’ve seen. With a distinctly average 400:1 contrast ratio and an [...]

Microsoft's new HTML5 Labs lets developers experiment with emerging Web standards

html5labs
Microsoft just launched a new site/developer playground called HTML5 Labs. It's a service letting developers experiment with parts of the HTML5 standard that are still emerging - things like WebSockets, a standard draft allowing bi-directional communication over a single TCP socket.

Rather than another shiny HTML5 showcase ready for general consumption, this is aimed at hard-core developers eager to get their hands dirty: Each prototype has to be installed and configured manually, and the whole thing comes with a big red "WARNING" label saying that the specifications are unstable and will change.

Still, if you're a Web developer trying to keep ahead of your game, it's much nicer to be able to see and play with actual implementations rather than read dry drafts of Web standards.

Apple on iPad competition: Windows is 'big and heavy,' next-gen Android tablets are still vapor

Apple's COO (and current Steve Jobs stand-in) Tim Cook thinks "there's not much" competition to the company's iPad tablet. When queried about Apple's view on what the rest of the market offers, Cook was brutally candid in describing Windows-driven machines as generally being big, heavy and expensive, while current generations of Android-based slates are in his opinion merely "scaled-up smartphones." While we agree that Windows 7 isn't a terribly touch-friendly affair, we don't know that Cook's comments on Android are quite so pertinent now that Google's tablet-savvy Honeycomb iteration has been unveiled. Then again, he has something to say about the next generation of Android tablets as well, noting that the ones announced at CES lack pricing and release schedules, leading him to conclude that "today they're vapor." Ouch. As a parting shot, Tim took a moment to reaffirm Apple's belief that its integrated approach will always trump the fragmented nature of Android and its plurality of app stores. Hear his comments in full after the break.

Acer to Phase Out Netbooks in Favor of Tablets

Add Acer to the growing list of companies with new tablets in the pipeline. The Taiwanese computer manufacturer has announced plans to release both a 7-inch and a 10-inch tablet in 2011. The new tablets are intended to gradually replace the company’s line of netbook computers, said Acer’s Taiwan sales manager Lu Bing-Hsian. “That’s the direction [...]

?Rec? Camera: Giant Viewfinder and Two-Way Screen

You know those movies when a filmmaker wanders the streets dressed in a beret and peers at potential shots through a frame made by his fingers and thumbs? Well, the Rec concept camera does just that, only instead of your thumbs the frame swings from the side of the camera, and instead of a beret [...]

Among Britney Spears Singles, Where Does 'Hold It Against Me' Rank?

'It's going to stick, but it doesn't have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song,' one expert says.

Britney Spears got grimy on her newest single, "Hold It Against Me," a Dr. Luke/ Max Martin-produced thrashing club tune about lusting on the dance floor. It serves as the lead single from Brit's March album, and it follows in the tradition of other Brit lead singles like " ... Baby One More Time," "Oops! ... I Did It Again" and "Womanizer," which had Britney-philes (and even some Britney haters) on the dance floor.

But how does the track stack up against previous Britney singles? MTV News caught up with some Spears scholars to get their thoughts.

"I would probably [rank this] less on the 'Oops!'/'Toxic' level and more on the 'Womanizer' [level], where it's that thing where it's a really repetitive chorus that you could fit on a fortune cookie," Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. "Two weeks later, you're, like, dreaming that song and singing it in the shower and hating yourself for singing it through your commute, so I think it's kind of insidious and it's going to stick, but it doesn't have that little pixie dust that makes a really magical Britney song."

Perez Hilton seemed to feel similarly about the song, admitting that he likes the direction this track takes compared to the work she's put out on her last few records. "I think 'Hold It Against Me' is definitely better than a lot of things she's done in the past, but not quite as good as 'Toxic.' I like 'Hold It Against Me' better than 'Womanizer,' but not as much as 'Circus.'

"I don't think is revolutionary," he continued. "It's not groundbreaking, but it's a fun track. It's a great setup single to remind everybody 'Britney's back.' This is Britney's 'pay attention to me' track."

MTV News' very own Jim Cantiello said the song certainly isn't " ... Baby One More Time," but it's also not "3," and that's good with him. "Do I think it's better than 'Womanizer' and '3'? Hell yes! ... To me, it sounds very much like Britney," he explained. "Her voice is back, but it still has that dirty, filthy dance sound that I loved on Blackout."

But what do you think of "Hold It Against Me"? Let us know in the comments below!

Cocoon hands on: the one-shot solution to private and secure Firefox browsing

Cocoon
A lot has been said about safe, secure surfing in recent months. Firesheep brought the necessity for HTTPS (and WPA-encrypted WLAN) into the limelight, and the Gawker Media breach reminded all of us that no one is safe.

The truth is, if you want to stay secure on the Web, you have to take a proactive stance. You need to install LastPass or KeePass, and using HTTPSEverywhere is a very good idea too. A good anti-virus suite like Microsoft Security Essentials is a necessity, and get into the habit of regularly scanning with Malwarebytes.

Alternatively, you can scrap everything and just use Cocoon, a service that proposes to solve all of your privacy and security problems in one fell swoop. There is a 45-day free trial, and it requires Firefox 3.6.13. I suggest you install it, and then read on!
