Col. Littleton No.5 Pocket for iPad Review

Love at first site isn’t a phrase that I toss around all that often. Some say I’ve become a little jaded when it comes to accessories for my favorite gadgets. I guess it’s easy to see how I may have become that way. After all, I’ve been reviewing gadgets and their assorted accoutrements for close [...]

How to use names instead of cell addresses in Microsoft Excel

Excel
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

By default, Excel uses cell references in formulas, which results in formulas that look like D5/20 (Meaning, divide the contents of cell D5 by 20). This is fine as long as your formulas are very simple. If you start pulling in data from multiple cells and using many complex formulas in a single spreadsheet, however, it becomes increasingly difficult to remember what each cell address means.

That's where named ranges come in handy. As the name implies, these are names you can give ranges of cells -- but a range can also be a single cell! So rather than having a formula read D5/20, you could have it read CostOfLiving/20. "CostOfLiving" is actually a named range consisting of one single cell.

This all sounds quite complex, but once you name your first cell you'll see how simple it is. To do this, simply:

  • Select the cell you wish to name.
  • Click the Name Box. This is the text box to the left of the formula bar - it should contain your cell's current address (say, H12).
  • Type in whatever name you wish to use for this cell (say, "MonthlyExpenses"). It must not contain spaces.
  • That's it! You can now use this name in all of your formulas instead of the cell's address.

Ubuntu 11.04 officially switches default media player to Banshee

Among the changes slated for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal was the replacement of another long-time default application. With recent releases, we've seen Empathy take over instant messaging duties and Shotwell inserted to handle photo management. It's also been discussed for quite some time that Canonical should, perhaps, pull the pin on the Rhythmbox audio player.

That's finally happened, as current builds of Ubuntu 11.04 have finally made the switch to Banshee. If you're not familiar with Banshee, it's a full-featured media player. It supports a number of audio and video formats, can sync with Android and iOS devices, offers built-in MP3 purchases via Amazon and eMusic, and sports Last.fm and Wikipedia integration.

OMG! Ubuntu ran a poll a few months ago, and user preference was pretty evenly divided between Rhythmbox and Banshee, but Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth has previously stated that "Ubuntu is not a Democracy." If they've decided to add Banshee to the mix, it's getting added -- but anyone who might be upset by that probably knows how to quickly remove it and install Rhythmbox via a terminal session anyway.

Windows Ill-Suited to Touchscreens, New Tablets Show

Most of the tablets released in 2011 will be Android-based, but a few stalwarts are sticking with Windows. We recently got a closer look at two tablets shown off in Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's CES 2011 keynote: The Acer Iconia and the Asus Eee Slate EP121. Together, they show the potential -- and the limitations -- of a Windows-based tablet strategy.

Motorola and Verizon team up to give away NFL Pro Bowl tickets

 Verizon NFL Pro Bowl

Verizon has started a contest that will reward a pair of tickets to the NFL Pro Bowl game for a lucky winner. The contest involves picking which Verizon Android phone you use -- only Motorola phones here, sorry fellow Droid Incredible users -- and registering into the contest. It looks like you don't have to actually have the device you pick as your "king of the gridiron" and the only entry requirement is that you be at least 13 years old. It would seem that customers on other carriers should have no problem entering.

One winner will be chosen and he or she shall receive:

  • Two tickets to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii on Jan. 30.
  • Two plane tickets.
  • Two-night stay at a hotel for two rooms.
  • The Motorola phone they chose when entering the contest (we would suggest shying away from the Devour)
  • $125 in Verizon gift cards

The whole thing ends at midnight on Jan. 15, so anyone interested should head on past the link and register pronto. [Verizon

RetroMash is a Tetris-Space Invaders mash-up -- Time Waster

retromash
Do you enjoy 8-bit music? How about retro classics, like Space Invaders and Tetris? If so, RetroMash is just the game for you.

It's an interesting mash-up: Blocky-looking space invaders drop down from the top of the level; you have a cursor that looks like a Tetris block. You must place the cursor so space invaders "fill" all of the available spots in it, and then click to make the space invaders explode. As soon as that happens, the cursor changes its shape, becoming another Tetris block.

Another rule is that you must place the cursor so that it touches the "bottom" of the space-invader group. Meaning, you can't just plant it anywhere, but at least a part of it must always touch the "open air" at the bottom of the space invader pile.

The game starts off very easy; the first three minutes were trivial - something I could definitely do while calmly sipping a cup of coffee. Then it started getting a bit more intense. All in all, it's a fun game, and I love how creative the mash-up is.
