Beyonce Working With Kanye West Producer S1

'Power' producer tweets he's 'finishing up some monsters' after week in the studio with B.

Beyoncé's already taken inspiration from the likes of Michael Jackson and Lauryn Hill, hit the studio with a list of producers that includes Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin, and now, she's hoping to capture the surge of Kanye West's "Power."

B — who's already hard at work on the follow-up to her massive I Am ... Sasha Fierce album — just wrapped a week in the studio with producer S1, the man who co-produced "Power" and has logged time with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Erykah Badu.

S1 broke the news via his Twitter account and also posted a photo of himself and B over on his official site. And from the sound of things, the sessions, which took place in New York City, were definitely eventful.

"A couple of meetings then back in the lab with Beyonce today," he wrote in one tweet. "Excited to see what we're gonna create today after last night's session.

"Not going to bed anytime soon. Beyonce got us in here working and I'm loving every bit of it," he wrote in another post. "Finishing up some monsters ... everything is sounding really great and big!"

There's still not much information about Beyoncé's new album, though in an interview with "Entertainment Tonight" last year, she said that, this time out, she's aiming to "make [her] own genre of music." In a follow-up interview with MTV News, she clarified that statement, explaining that she's "mixing every type of genre that I love" on the new album, and added, "I'm not in a box. It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."

What do you think S1's work with Beyoncé will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

Students Build Cake-Frosting Robot, Should Win Nobel Prize

Over at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering near Boston, Massachusetts, the students know what makes a worthwhile project. The AutoFrost is a robot which has one delicious purpose: frosting cakes. The human operator enters some basic cake-stats, like size and color, and then hits the splendidly-worded go-button: “I’m ready to design an amazing cake”. [...]

Tasty Static is a fun SkyRoads re-make -- Time Waster

tastystatic
First off, let me preface this time waster by saying it requires a download. That's right - this is not a Flash game, and you have to run it from your own computer. But it is free and available for Windows, OS X and Linux, and this is Download Squad after all.

Last week I wrote about a time waster called Flyde, saying it really reminded me of an old game I used to play as a kid, but couldn't remember its name. Commenter TnS was the first to point out I'm talking about SkyRoads. Of course, I immediately went to Wikipedia to read all about this old favorite of mine, and that's where I found a modern re-make: Tasty Static.

Tasty Static is fast. Just like SkyRoads, you drive a race car along a track that hangs in space, and you must constantly jump and move left and right to keep the track under your vehicle. Press UP to accelerate, LEFT and RIGHT to turn, and SPACE to jump. If you're chicken, you can also press DOWN to slow down. You know you shouldn't, though.

By default, the resolution is just 640x480, but it's not like you're missing out on a lot of detail. The graphics can be described as rudimentary at best - there are just enough pixels on the screen for you to see the road and the obstacles. But hey, that's what retro is all about, right?

How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications

Ribbon
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it's tall - far taller than a "traditional" menu. If you're working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.

To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon's tabs, such as "Home". The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you'd rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that's what I normally do).

Evernote for webOS update brings better formatting and tagging, improved notebook view

One of the marquee apps for webOS has received a significant update, with Evernote adding loads of new functionality to its latest version. Among the additions are notebook sorting and filtering options, and a list view for displaying your notes without thumbnails -- a nice way to save a little mobile bandwidth. The editor has also been greatly improved and now offers richer text formatting options, including a choice of 30 font colors.

Adding tags to notes is now easier as well -- just tap the tag icon and select previously-used tags from the list. Currently the list closes after you make your first selection, so hopefully Evernote will change that behavior to make adding multiple tags a smoother process. You'll also only see six tags, and the list isn't scrollable -- so you can only pick from the tags Evernote chooses to display.

To close their official announcement, the Evernote team dangles a carrot in front of users, saying they're "committed to the webOS platform, so you can expect lots more in the future." As someone who owns a Palm Pre, that's nice to hear.

ADW.Launcher for Android hands on: attractive and highly customizable, but bloated

Sitting like rough and tawdry monarchs atop of the Android home screen and app launcher pile are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher. We've reviewed Zeam Launcher, and looked at Go Launcher and QuickDesk, but somehow the two big boys have always escaped our critical eye. Well, no more!

Today we're going to look at ADW.Launcher. It's a free download, but there's an 'EX' version that will cost you about $3. It shares a lot of its features with Zeam -- and its looks are somewhat similar, too -- but ADW is a lot more customizable. There are also a healthy number of ADW themes from third party developers, which provide easy access to 'unique' and sexy home screens.

Right then! Roll up your pants, it's time to wade in.
