New Led Zeppelin On The Way? Jason Bonham Hints At 'Jam' Sessions With Jimmy Page -- But Not Robert Plant

Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'
By Chris Harris

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.

"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."

He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."

Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Tune Pop for Android lets you easily see what song is playing

Tune Pop for Android, music notification
Notifications on the Android platform a bit, er, awful. The notification bar at the top of the screen just simply doesn't cut it when it comes to displaying important information -- it's completely out of the way, and it garbles anything longer than a few words. Basically, it's only useful if you actively check -- let's see if I have any messages.. -- which isn't really the point of notifications.

Tune Pop isn't a fix for all of Android's notification problems, but it does make listening to music a whole lot easier. Tune Pop shows a toast box in the middle of your screen, whether you are currently in your music player app or not. Obviously, this doesn't help if you are actively using your phone as a music player -- but if you've started some music, then switched to the Web browser or GPS navigation, Tune Pop's notifications are pretty damn handy! Don't worry if you miss the first notification, either: just shake your phone and the toast window will pop back up.

Tune Pop is free [AppBrain], and works with most Android media players, including the built-in apps, Grooveshark, Winamp, MixZing, and more. If you want to customize the notification windows, you'll need to pick up the Pro version for 99 cents. There's a QR code for the free version after the break.

Firefox 4 beta 9 now available to download

Firefox logoMozilla has just released the latest version of Firefox 4 Beta. As we're now into the closing stretch, there aren't any new or exciting features with this release -- just tweaks and bug fixes. The bookmarks and history code has been overhauled, which will improve browser startup and bookmarking speed (was bookmarking ever slow?). Per-compartment garbage collection has also been enabled, which improves the efficiency of complex animations.

As we reported earlier this week, Firefox 4 is hopefully on target for an end-of-February release. There's still one more beta to pump out, though, and then a release candidate or two. A little bird tells me that the final build of Internet Explorer 9 might also appear around the same time, too...

For more details, check the full Firefox 4 beta 9 release notes.

ADW.Launcher for Android hands on: attractive and highly customizable, but bloated

Sitting like rough and tawdry monarchs atop of the Android home screen and app launcher pile are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher. We've reviewed Zeam Launcher, and looked at Go Launcher and QuickDesk, but somehow the two big boys have always escaped our critical eye. Well, no more!

Today we're going to look at ADW.Launcher. It's a free download, but there's an 'EX' version that will cost you about $3. It shares a lot of its features with Zeam -- and its looks are somewhat similar, too -- but ADW is a lot more customizable. There are also a healthy number of ADW themes from third party developers, which provide easy access to 'unique' and sexy home screens.

Right then! Roll up your pants, it's time to wade in.

Mike Jones? Kiss-Off Letter To Laid Off MySpacers: ?We Can?t Continue On This Journey Together?

Whenever a company lays off 500 people, as MySpace did earlier this week when it gave half its employees walking papers, it generates quite a bit of anger and bitterness. The latest tip in our inbox from a dispirited former employee goes into a details about do-nothing managers who still have their jobs while all their underlings are now unemployed. I won't repeat the character assassinations here, but the former MySpacer did include something else I will share: The kiss-off letter from CEO Mike Jones. "He didn't even take the time to personally sign the letters. It's just a xerox copy," laments the former employee. You can read the termination letter below. It is pretty standard, thanking those being laid off for their "dedication and commitment to MySpace" especially through its recent relaunch. This is the part, though that must really rankle:

Hotmail users lose entire email inboxes, Microsoft restores them 5 days later

Hotmail lost emailHotmail users have only just had their email inboxes restored after a few long, worrying days. The data loss began at the end of December, with the Windows Live Solution Center spawning over a thousand "help, my inbox is missing!" threads, and only now is posting beginning to dry up. The exact number of affected users is unknown, but could easily be in the millions.

Microsoft hasn't yet stated the cause of the massive data loss, but considering some users lost email inboxes spanning years, we should be glad that adequate backups were kept. The data loss occurred around December 28, and it affected everything in Hotmail accounts, including sent items. Some users reported that the only message they had been left with was the classic "Welcome to Hotmail" email.

Still, it seems like everything is now back to normal. Considering just how much data was lost, it was probably a crashed database server which then had to be restored -- but hopefully Microsoft will let us all know what really happened.

Update: Microsoft says that 17,355 accounts were affected by the outage, which was apparently caused by "mailbox load balancing between servers."
