Assero Industries Introduce Unique, Front-Facing iPad Bags

The founder of Assero Industries found a major drawback to the iPad was that he couldn’t use it unless he was sitting.  He wanted a case that would work well for the commuter, traveler, and sports enthusiast like himself.  He wanted a case that would serve as a mobile office to keep his iPad, wallet, [...]

Canabalt and Flixel for iOS open-sourced, and the last day of Indie iPhone Holiday Sale

Canabalt, which shot to fame in 2009 and popularized the 'auto running' mechanic seen in games throughout 2010 (such as Solipskier), has just been released as an open source project under the MIT license. Curiously, it is the iOS version of the game that has been released, not the original Flash version.

Canabalt, if you haven't played it (play the Flash version now!), is a game all about collisions, and moving at incredibly fast speeds. Developers (or curious players) might be interested in Tuning Canabalt (part 1 & part 2), a series of blog posts about the fine-tuning of Canabalt's game mechanics. (The third part hasn't been published yet, incidentally.) The open-sourcing of Canabalt means that developers can finally take a look at the clever code behind the game.

Interestingly, this release, despite it being dressed up as Canabalt being open-sourced, seems to be more about the game library behind Canabalt: Flixel. Flixel is an open-source library for Flash game development, but it was ported to iOS for Canabalt. While there are no shortage of game engines and libraries for iOS, Flixel will make a great addition.

In other news, until the end of today, you can take advantage of the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale. Six great games are available for just $0.99, and 30% of revenue (after Apple's cut) will be given to the Child's Play charity. If you want to get your hands on a cheap copy of Canabalt, Solipskier, Drop7, Eliss, Osmos, or Spider, now's your chance -- over $30,000 has been raised for Child's Play so far!

Microsoft's ARM move is about offering the same Windows experience on all kinds of devices

Tonight was the big CES 2011 keynote by Microsoft head honcho Steve Ballmer, and Windows on ARM took center stage. Those of you hoping to see some in-depth ARM action -- well, you'll have to wait until Microsoft and its partners have had a bit more time to flesh things out.

If the interface looks familiar to you, that's because at this point we're looking at a new version of Windows beneath the current Windows 7 UI. No new Windows features are on display at this point, but Internet Explorer 9, and Office for ARM were the only apps on display -- as well as a recompiled Epson print driver which made a brief background appearance to spit out a short Word document. The demo on Nvidia's Tegra 2 hardware was particularly impressive, playing back the Iron Man 2 trailer in full HD without so much as a hiccup and running IE9 HTML5 demos with aplomb.

According to Ballmer, the move to embrace ARM is all about meeting customer expectations. Users increasingly expect the same experience on all their devices -- from desktop to laptop to smartphone. Windows, he said, can provide that experience, and Microsoft will continue working not only with ARM partners like Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments, but also x86 kingpins Intel and AMD to achieve their goal.

WITN: Wikileaks Is Dead ? Long Live Julian Assange

After Paul's Saturday post about Julian Assange resulted in him being labelled a US government stooge - not to mention receiving a couple of death threats (no, really) - he's decided never again to discuss the founder of Wikileaks. In fact, after much consideration, he's decided that he was wrong (as was Vanity Fair) and TechCrunch commenters were right: Assange is an unblemished hero of openness, and in this week's episode of Why Is This News, we celebrate his many worthy accomplishments. Nah, just kidding. Slightly NSFW video below.
