Grate That Bar of Soap Like It's a Block of Cheap Cheddar [Concepts]

The designer may cite ecological reasons for eschewing the liquid soap for a bar of soap, but me? I just love the sheer brilliance of this concept. Grated soap! I demand all public toilets fit them immediately. [NathalieStämpfli via Kottke] More »

Foodspotting Scoops Up $3 Million From BlueRun Ventures

Location-based food discovery tool, Foodspotting has just picked up 3 million in series A funding from BlueRun Ventures, days shy of its one year anniversary on January 15th. Angels from the previous $750k seed round will also be following on and BlueRun's Jay Jamison will be joining Foodspotting's board. Foodspotting CEO Alexa Andrzejewski tells TechCrunch that the company chose BlueRun specifically because of their focus on growth in the mobile space. Foodspotting lets you snap up pictures of dishes at restaurants and also has a simple food recommendation algorithm which Andrzejewski says will be bolstered with the most recent financing.

Cisco's Cius tablet gets the Verizon LTE treatment

It looks like Verizon's gone and added yet another device -- make that two -- to their 4G LTE network. The company announced Thursday that it will offer the business-savvy Cius tablet on LTE starting this March, and will also offer LTE interfaces for Cisco's second generation Integrated Service Router. Verizon says it's got about one-third of the US covered with LTE, which offers downstream speeds between 5Mbps and 12Mbps, and will have the other two-thrids blanketed by 2012. If you're lucky enough to live in that first one-third, the Cius tablet, which sports a 7-inch diagonal touchscreen and weighs about 1.15lbs, could become your preferred form of business communication -- it offers HD video streaming, real-time video, and multi-party conferencing. Cius will also have 3G capability for those unfortunate souls operating outside of the LTE sphere. Verizon isn't ready to settle on a data plan for the tablet, as its main functions have potential to eat up a ton of bandwidth, but they're pretty sure employers will be the ones footing the bill.

Google Goggles gets faster, does Sudoku

Google GogglesGoogle Goggles

Google Goggles is pretty damn cool, being able to nearly instantly recognize just about anything you can take a picture of. And in Version 1.3, it's gotten faster -- and smarter.

First off, scanning barcodes is much faster. Takes about a second now. Then there's the print ad feature -- scan the ad and it'll find search results about the product. And what's really cool is that you can scan a Sudoku puzzle and have the puzzle solved for your lazy butt get a little help. It's pretty damn cool. Video of it in action and download links are after the break. [Google]

Don't Buy the Verizon iPhone 4 [IPhone]

The day that Verizon gets the iPhone will be remembered as glorious by everybody who's dropped 12 calls in a row, been taunted by meaningless signal bars and just plain had a miserable AT&T experience. But they shouldn't buy one. More »

Ford Focus Electric pops a hatch and shows all that battery junk in its trunk

Ford Focus Electric pops a hatch and shows all that battery junk in its trunk
The five-door Ford Focus is an eminently practical vehicle, and the Electric version will be as well. However, we're now learning that it won't be quite as practical as we'd hoped. We didn't get the chance to pop the rear hatch on the thing when we were exploring it at CES. Here in Detroit we did and you can see what we found above. That's definitely a big 'ol box, putting a hurting on cargo space, but ultimately a small price to pay for rolling totally fuel- and emissions-free.

How to make only part of a cell bold in Microsoft Excel

This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

By default, when you click a cell in Excel and hit Ctrl+B or the B button on the toolbar, the entire text of the cell becomes bold. However, sometimes you may want to make just part of the text bold, and not the whole thing.

To do this, simply start editing the cell by hitting F2. Select the text you'd like to make bold, and hit Ctrl+B. This will make only this part of the cell bold.

You can use this same technique to color specific words in the cell: Select one or two words while editing a cell, and use the Font Color button to change their color.
