Kindle for Android updated with integrated store, zoom, move to SD and more

kindle
Our good friends over at Engadget report that a new version of Kindle for Android is now out. Here's what's new:
  • The volume buttons can now be used to turn pages. This isn't touted as a major change, but it's actually very handy.
  • There's an in-app store just like on the 'real' Kindle. It's very mobile friendly, and offers books and subscriptions for newspapers and magazines. Just what you'd expect, basically.
  • SD card support: The app can now be moved to SD with no hackery involved.
  • Chapter titles are now shown on the status bar. That's actually the top part of the status bar; not all books have this enabled, as the screenshot to the right of Food Rules shows, due to their small size, but further testing with larger books such as Seth Godin's Linchpin did work.
  • Other updates: Social network sharing, graphics zoom, and bug fixes.
All in all, a worthy update. You can find the QR after the jump.

Wonder Why Is Verizon is Unveiling the CDMA iPhone? [Apple]

Because technically, Apple and Verizon aren't showing a new product; just a variant of an old one. That's the theory offered up by Apple know-it-all Jim Dalrymple on TechCrunch. I'm OK with that theory. More »

Tablets at CES 2011: Honeycomb, Windows 7, and all the rest

It's been raining tablets here at CES 2011. No seriously, it as if the sky has opened up in Vegas and dropped touchscreen slabs with Android and Windows 7 operating systems on our heads. It's been nearly impossible to keep track of the number of tablets released and the details we've learned about them... until now, that is. After the break you will find a complete list of all the tablets we have heard about as well as a few key details about 'em. You'll notice that most of the tablets listed plan to run Android 3.0 -- if you're looking for more on Google's not-yet-released tablet OS, you'll want to check out our guided tour and our interview with Google's Matias Duarte. The show isn't over yet so expect us to add more tablets over the next couple of days, but without further ado, we give you the official Engadget tablet chart of CES 2011.

You'll also note that we've denoted our favorites in bold, so pay closer attention to those and make sure to click through to hear why they've impressed us so much. Enjoy!

The MySpace of Jared Lee Loughner, the Guy Who Shot a Congresswoman, Hinted at Violence [Video]

This is supposed to be the MySpace of Jared Loughner, the 22-year old kid who shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, wounded 12 and killed a federal judge today. It's unsettling to see the kid's placement of violence against a US History textbook. More »

UPDATED: Kevin Rose: iPad 2 coming Feb. 1 with dual cameras, Retina Display

Digg founder Kevin Rose, whose record with Apple rumors ranges from spot on to completely wrong, now claims he has it on good authority that iPad 2 will be announced in 3-4 weeks, possibly February 1, and include dual cameras as well as a Retina Display. Dual cameras seem almost certain given how Apple is pushing [...]

Google CR-48 netbook hacked to run Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard

We already shared Google's instructions for installing Ubuntu on a CR-48 Chrome OS netbook with you, but one enthusiast has decided to take things a step further. After all, if you can get two x86 operating systems running on the CR-48 why not try for three or four?

YouTube user Damis648 has managed to get both Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard running on Google's plain black machine. It's a commendable effort, though with the CR-48's limited internal storage you're not going to have much wiggle room left after installing either OS.

But hey, if "because it's there" worked for George Mallory, why not take the same approach to laptop hacking? Video footage after the break!
