Location-Based Services Are Becoming Social Network Outcasts

All the recent news about Facebook -- from its founder being named Time magazine's Person of the Year to Goldman Sachs placing a $450 million bet on its future profitability -- makes it clear that social networking platforms are hot commodities. It's also clear, however, that not all social networking platforms are created equal.

CES 2011: Live From The Show Floor

Today is the day. Today is the day where we can put the nonsense of yesterday's press events behind us and actually get on the floor of CES 2011 with our Ustream equipment. Hallelujah. The show technically opens at 10:00am, but we're kicking off the day with a live interview with Ford's superstar CEO, Alan Mulally at 9:00 in Ford's North Hall booth. We have twenty minutes with the man, so please, drop any questions you may have in the comments below concerning Ford's roll in vehicle technology, the auto maker's stance on EVs, or anything else, really. We're certainly going to ask Detroit's top car guy how he feels about the new US Top Gear series. After the Mulally interview, we're going to hit the show floor hard and fast with our Ustream equipment. There's a lot to see here and we only have a couple short days to bring it all. So yeah, click over to CES.CrunchGear.com for the latest news and the live Ustream feed, which we'll fire up at 9:00am PST today is live right now.

Dell Streak 7 official on T-Mobile's 4G network, bringing dual-core Tegra 2 and Froyo

Dell's Looking Glass tablet has just received its official papers, being dubbed the Streak 7 and packed off to T-Mobile HSPA+ network. Alas, unlike its fellow CES debutants from the likes of Motorola and LG, this slate only has Android 2.2 on board, no Honeycomb, but you do get a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, a Gorilla Glass-protected screen, 16GB of internal memory, and of course the greatness and glory of that 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. T-Mobile retail stores and Dell's direct online outlet should have the Streak 7 "in the coming weeks." Full PR and an introductory video follow after the break.

2010 had some great jams, and all week, MTV News has been counting down some of its best. Everything from Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and Rick Ross' "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" to two of Kanye's West's killer My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy tracks, "Power" and "Runaway," made the top 10. But it was Usher's bombastic party jam "OMG" that rose to the top and came in at #1.

So what made that song such a party anthem? "Oh my God! That's exactly what I would say! Oh my God!" Pauly D joked about 2010's top party jam. "Dope, dope track. I love playing it. The crowd goes crazy when I play it. Usher's the man!"

Travie McCoy added: "It's a great song. It's undeniable, you know what I mean?"

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer admitted that "OMG" was the track that got dancers, both professional and amateur, on the dance floor. "You guys got a great dance anthem," she said. "So be prepared for people who do not know how to dance just going to town!"

Producer Alex Da Kid gave props to will.i.am for the song's epic beat. "I love 'OMG.' I think it's definitely something different for Usher," he said. "And it still has all the dance performance elements Usher's known for, but it's something slightly different and done in a will.i.am kind of way, and it's different and that's why it connected to so many different people. It's a great song."

Celebrities also weighed in on their favorite jams of 2010, choosing everything from Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" to B.o.B and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes."

Why did you love "OMG" in 2010? Tell us in the comments!

XBMC 10.0 released with new add-on system and a ton of improvements

xbmc
XBMC is a fantastic media center application, and while it works well for dedicated HTPCs, it also plays nice on desktop computers, alongside your other software. But now XBMC has hit the version 10.0 milestone with a plethora of changes and improvements. Here's a small sample of the goodies you can look forward to in 10.0:

  • Add-on support: The biggest change -- add-ons can now be browsed, installed, and updated from within XBMC itself, making it easy to change XBMC's look-and-feel or give it new functionality.
  • WebM/VP8 codecs: You can now watch videos encoded using Google's latest open-source video format right from within XBMC.
  • Hardware acceleration added for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Linux improvement: VDAPU support improved and VAAPI support added.
There's a comprehensive changelog with much more, but why not just take the new, free, XBMC for a spin?

Michael Jackson Producers Defend Posthumous Michael Album

'Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences,' Theron 'Neff-U' Feemster tells MTV News of picking up where MJ left off.

Michael Jackson's first posthumous album, Michael, has been met with mixed emotions by fans of the King of Pop. Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am lashed out at MJ's estate for commissioning the album, while Akon, a contributor on the project, hailed the effort.

Some of the songwriters and producers behind Michael are simply asking people to give it a chance before making a decision.

"They're gonna love the music, because it speaks for itself," Eddie Cascio, who is credited as a songwriter on "Breaking News," told MTV News. "Michael sounds great. The songs are great. The production sounds great. Teddy Riley did a phenomenal job finishing off the songs. The quality and production are incredible."

Theron "Neff-U" Feemster agreed. The producer had a hand in three of the album's 10 tracks, including "Hollywood Tonight" and standouts "(I Like) The Way You Love Me" and "Best of Joy." Feemster worked with Jackson in the past, as did the majority of the contributors to Michael, which he thinks made the project uniquely authentic despite MJ having little say in the way his tracks were completed.

"It wasn't difficult," Feemster told MTV News of picking up the rough material. "It was like coloring. It was coloring a frame that was already structured. Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences. I understood the expectations that he wanted. He wanted to be beyond great. He wanted to give the world a gift, something they'd never heard or seen before. So even after his passing, it was great to have a great team of people to work with who also had experience working with Michael. It made it that much easier. Bringing very creative people together and people who understood his integrity and what he wanted as well, it was great."

What do you think of Michael? Share your reviews in the comments.

Metro Home brings a little Windows Phone 7 style to your desktop

HTC Home is a nice desktop implementation of HTC's shiny Android homescreen widgets. Suppose, however, you prefer the typographical simplicity of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. Well, you're in luck: HTC Home's developer has just released Metro Home for Windows.

Metro Home is a portable, customizable desktop widget (remixed from HTC Home) which can display the date and time, local weather conditions, and a short range forecast. It's also got a small picture display window like the one you can utilize on the Windows Phone 7 homescreen. Right now, if you want to change the default path you'll need to do some manual hacking as described by the developer -- or you can drop some files into the Metro_Home\Widgets\WeatherClock\Pictures folder.

The .Net 4.0 framework is required, so make sure you've got it installed prior to launching Metro Home.

Android 2.4 caught on Xperia Arc, could be small Gingerbread update

 Android 2.4 caught on camera

Google barely got done launching Android 2.3 Gingerbread and already 2.4 is being caught on camera. Dutch tech site Tweakers got to play with an Xperia Arc and were surprised to find 2.4 listed as the software version. After some poking around on the device, they concluded that the update was likely a small update for Gingerbread in the vein of Android 2.0 and 2.1, both of which were named Eclair. The biggest feature seems to be an uncompleted Google Talk app that would allow video calling -- a feature Google is including in the tablet-centric Honeycomb. It seems they got a hand on a very early version of the OS so we likely won't hear much about 2.4 for some time. [Tweakers via Engadget]
