Blue Announces Yeti Pro

Today Blue Microphones officially announces the Yeti Pro. I had the pleasure of reviewing the Yeti back in August. I liked it then, and have only found more reasons to like it since. So what makes this a Pro?I mean, besides the slick black paint job. First it adds XLR output to facilitate use with [...]

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video

Major news from Google just hit at CES: Android 3.0, dubbed Honeycomb, has been revealed. It might be a leak, but the video is very well made and looks quite solid. While a new Android version is always a big deal, this leak is made all the more significant by the platform's apparent shift in focus. It's all about the tablets now.

While Android for phones is certainly not going away, the Honeycomb video features a bold statement, "Built Entirely for Tablet." And the UI really shows it, as you can see in the screencap above. Gmail looks different, but that's just one change. The whole interface underwent a radical change, to work with the tablet form factor. Other highlights from the video:

  • A 3D-looking task switcher
  • A massive software keyboard, quite reminiscent of a certain tablet that shall remain nameless (ahem)
  • Rich widgets on a roomy homescreen -- the Gmail widget looks basically like the current Gmail app
  • A strong emphasis on Google Books, including "live" widgets (scroll through books on the widget)
  • A tabbed browser, looking vaguely Chrome-like
  • A panorama-like view of YouTube with a 3D "wall" of thumbnails
  • Video-enabled Gtalk
  • Solid zoom-and-pan action with the new Maps app, including 3D buildings. This seems similar to Maps v5, but it looks so much better on a tablet.
  • Lots of futuristic-looking neon text
Exciting times indeed! Now let's see a review unit.

Twitter?s Golden Egg: Location

Twitter?s core strength?limiting posts to 140 characters?has created opportunities for other websites and apps to siphon off and capture users around activity that originated on Twitter. These new sites and services leverage Twitter?s distribution pipes, free of charge, offering little or nothing in return. In 2010, these common tweeting behaviors created opportunities for new entrepreneurs to leverage. In pictures, Instagram became a hit with its range of filters and sharing features while users could also choose to have their in-app photos hosted by external blogging sites such as Posterous. For introductions, Hashable provided a service whereby users could easily exchange contact information and keep track of what introductions they were a part of. The act of posing questions in tweets has been captured by Quora. Twitter users? fascination with entertainment and sports has prompted Twitter hiring its own employee (@omid) in the Los Angeles area (and dedicating separate servers for Justin Bieber). On the political side, Twitter has made key hires from the DC beltway, and its possible a startup like Votizen could leverage the platform to help organize political interests online. Sports fans have sites like Fanvibe. For current events and information, Twitter helps drive traffic to a host of tech blogs, news blogs, and financial blogs, which themselves can be real lifestyle businesses. I?m sure there?s a business opportunity somewhere to collect and interact with Twitter users based on their expression of mood and emotion, though there could be some health and privacy concerns there. But, what about location? Is there a real, sustainable, long-term business model in location for Twitter?

Minimize all inactive windows in Windows 7 with a quick keyboard shortcut

Download Squad keyboard tricks
This week, we're running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

Sometimes you may find yourself in the middle of a working day with your desktop cluttered by a zillion open windows. This can be distracting and make it difficult to focus on what you're doing right now. If you like using your mouse, you could use Aero Shake; just click the title bar of the window you're trying to focus on, and "shake" it around (move it from side to side quickly). All other windows would minimize, and you'd be left with just the window you want to see. But since this series is about the keyboard, here's how you do it without touching the mouse: hit Win+Home and every inactive window instantly minimizes. Presto! [Hitting Win+Home again un-minimizes every window! -Ed]

Come back tomorrow for the next keyboard tip, or, if you'd like to read a whole bunch at once, check out Sebastian's epic list.

People Aren't Really Buying Chrome OS Apps [Chrome Os]

After Google's big reveal of their Chrome OS platform, it seems people aren't so keen on paying for web apps. TechCrunch says that the most purchased paid app in the Chrome web store gets about 65 weekly purchases. Ouch. More »

FBReader Has Encyclopedic Knowledge of E-Book Formats

The concept of reading literature -- except for technical documentation -- on a computer screen has come a long way in the last few years. No doubt the growing popularity of EBRs, or electronic-book readers such as the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook are having a big impact on our reading habits.
