Updated Android Music app leaks out

Thanks to an eager (and extremely active) developer community, early access to upcoming Android bits has become somewhat of a regular occurrence. Recently we've seen the Gingerbread launcher and updated Market app, and now a user at xda-developers has released an early version of what will become the next Music app for Android.

It's still a bit rough around the edges, but it looks like it's going to be a very nice upgrade to the built-in player. Check out the gallery, or the video after the break, or grab the .APK installer over at the xda-developers forums. As always, caveat emptor!

Mac OS X Running on a Cr-48 Brings Back Memories of the Black MacBook [Video]

Albeit, a less useful black MacBook. But anyway! A hacker decided to toss Mac OS X onto the Google's Chrome OS laptop, the Cr-48, and mostly everything works. Well, except sleep, QE/CI and the trackpad is kinda wonky. Check it out. More »

Instagram for Android under development

Platform envy is pretty common with smartphone users. It's pretty much inevitable that popular apps will eventually make the jump from one mobile OS to the other, but the waiting game can often be frustrating. Still, at least you know it's coming -- and that's now the case with Instagram, the immensely popular photo filtering and sharing app for iOS.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom confirmed to TechCrunch that an Android version of the app is in the works, though the company isn't specifying a release date at this point. After amassing a userbase of over one million in just three months on iOS, though, the company's priority is on getting an API put together. So until that happens, Android users, you'll need to content yourselves with an alternative app like Vignette.

HTC EVO Shift 4G nonchalantly shows up for Amazon pre-order

So what if nobody has bothered to announce it yet? Sprint's upcoming EVO Shift 4G Android handset has turned up on Amazon's wireless outlet, albeit with the EVO's spec sheet. We were getting excited about an 8 megapixel camera with HD video capture and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing imager until we realized those specs probably didn't belong to the EVO Shift 4G -- thanks to a note describing this phone as having been "released in June, 2010." The product title is unequivocal, however, and offers you the EVO Shift 4G slider, to have and to hold, for $200 on a two-year contract. Clearly someone's got his or her EVOs mixed up and has HTC's second 4G cat for the Sprint network out of the bag a little early.

[Thanks, Ryan]

Update: The product image is user-submitted so we can probably disregard it. Still, Amazon's got HTC's unannounced phone up on its site, giving us the closest to official confirmation we've had yet.

Hands-on: Pinboard is a great Delicious alternative

pinboard
So, Yahoo! went ahead and announced it doesn't like Delicious anymore. This is pretty much the dumbest move I've seen Yahoo! do in recent memory, and Delicious is going to fight for its survival outside of Yahoo!.

I really hope Delicious is going to make it, and I have every reason to believe it will. It's an incredible service, and one of the cornerstones of the Internet. Still, since I rely so heavily on Delicious, as soon as word got out about Yahoo! trying to kill it, I started looking for alternatives.

One of the most-hyped alternatives is called Pinboard, a paid service with an interesting pricing model: you pay a one-time fee determined by the current number of users * $0.001. This means the more users sign on, the more expensive it becomes. When I signed on a couple of days ago, the price was around $7. Now it's $8.65, and will probably keep rising.

Still, it's not a lot of money to pay for a safe home for all of my bookmarks, away from a big company that may make questionable decisions about a service critical to so many users.

But what did I get for my $7? I made a comprehensive gallery that you can see after the jump, and I'm going to walk you through it. Read on for the details!

TextWeight Tracks Your Weight Loss Progress, Bugs You Through SMS

For me and many others "lose weight" isn't just a New Year's Day resolution, it's an every single morning one. But yeah, there's nothing like a crashing boozy halt to a December spent scarfing crappy chocolates and piling on the gravy to make you feel like you should hit the gym, especially after hitting the scales. A simple service created by Kevin Morrill, textWeight holds you to your New Year's weight loss resolutions by sending you a reminder text at 8am every morning, to which you reply (on the honor system) with your weight. textWeight then creates a graph of your weight loss progress, so you can measure every pound lost towards your goal over time.

Firefox 4 beta 3 for Android hands on: Mozilla browser hits the Market

Mozilla has released a new beta of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo to keep the mobile browser in step with its desktop cousin, and it packs a number of important improvements. Perhaps the most noticeable one on Android is that you can now find Firefox in the Market, meaning future updates will be a smoother process -- just make sure you uninstall any previous beta versions before downloading from the Market.

So what's new in Firefox 4 beta 3?

  • Improved support for both software and hardware keyboards
  • Android-style menus
  • Better integration with other apps when opening a link
  • A save page-as-PDF option
  • Improved Firefox Sync with new 'add a device' feature
  • Full screen video and improved audio support
  • Copy and paste support in the URL bar
  • Developer access to a localStorage API and orientation events
After browsing for a while with beta 3, I'm definitely left feeling it's faster than the previous non-Market release. Some pages, however, still load about 30-40% slower than they do in Dolphin Mini (my current browser of choice). The new features are definitely key additions -- especially basics like keyboard support and copy/paste in the URL bar. Firefox Sync setup is an absolute breeze now, thanks to the 'add a device' option in both the desktop and mobile versions.

Firefox 4 is also a bit of a space hog, currently consuming about 21MB -- ten times more than Dolphin Mini. And while I dig the desktop-to-mobile Firefox 4 synchronicity, I'm not sure it's enough to make me switch just yet. If I start doing more mobile surfing (which would make Sync more useful to me) and Mozilla kicks up the speed and trims a little fat, Firefox 4 will definitely be a strong contender for the coveted default browser crown.

Check out the gallery, or if you want to jump right in, use the QR code after the break. For more information, release notes and troubleshooting tips, check the Firefox Beta for Mobile website.

Freemake Video Converter adds Blu-Ray support, Web video downloading

Freemake's free Video Converter was already a very solid app, handling more than 200 import formats and able to output converted videos for playback on a wide array of devices. In the recently-released version 2.0, however, one major piece of missing functionality has been added.

Freemake 2 now supports Blu-Ray burning, allowing you to output dozens of hours of downloaded video to a single disc. If you don't have a Blu-Ray burner, no worries -- Freemake claims their media conversion kung-fu lets them cram 20 hours onto a single-layer DVD.

The upgrade doesn't stop there, however. Freemake 2 also adds the ability to download and convert videos directly from popular sharing sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Metacafe. Beyond sharing sites, Freemake can also grab video from Hulu, South Park Studios, The Daily Show, Megavideo, and several others -- including a good number of sites in the red light district. There's also a more full-featured preset editor, giving you advanced control over your default conversion settings.

The .Net 4.0 framework is required, but Freemake will install it for you if it's not already on your system.
